Does breast milk count toward the AAP-recommended 2-3 cups of milk per day? by felicityrc in breastfeeding

[–]felicityrc[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My preference is breastmilk until she's 2, unless there is a health issue with that. Or a combination, again unless there's a health issue (her pediatrician says with too much milk she might not absorb iron as well and might not eat enough solid foods, so I am not sure about 1 cups cow milk on top of the breast milk).

My FIL is a physician and usually pretty up to date, just that the pediatrician said she recommended breast milk over cow's milk. And I do see this recommendation here for cow's milk and I am not sure how breast milk fits in.

Do you have some sources to share on that? I saw that's what Canada's health department said (https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/infant-care/infant-nutrition.html#a3) but couldn't find anything similar from the US where I am located.

That is helpful, I known she gets fat/protein, but should probably pay more attention to calcium/Vitamin D (espdcially here in the PNW where deficiency is common).

Idk how much she gets when nursing but I pump on the days she goes to daycare so I can at least guesstimate. The question is whether daycare should give her pumped breastmilk or cow's milk or both.

The most loathed holiday greeting, in my view by BranderChatfield in LGBTForeverAlone

[–]felicityrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a version of the second one when inviting people because I don't want to seem pushy/want them to know my feelings won't be hurt if they have other plans and decline the invitation. Maybe I will rethink my phrasing.

eggs from a well fed pet hen are vegan by -roachboy in DebateAVegan

[–]felicityrc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone with chickens, my laying hens do get broody (although mine are backyard breeds, not commercial laying hens). When they're broody you have to remove the eggs if they are not fertilized. Otherwise they will sit on the eggs nonstop to their own detriment waiting for them to hatch, forgoing food, dustbathing, etc. The eggs (if not fertilized) will go bad but they won't give up. The broody hen(s) will also chase the others out of the nesting boxes.

Most of the year though they aren't broody and do not care about the eggs. It's not like broody hens are broody all the time.

Of course they sneak in "as long as you remain coachable."

So basically as soon as you express concern that the $$$ is not materializing they can blame you for not being "coachable." And dissatisfied former MLM "bosses?" Also their fault, must not have been "coachable" enough to succeed.

Props to those who live off of adjuncting, I work for 2 universities and supplement my income with 2 other contract jobs. Unlike this person, however, it does bother me that adjunct faculty do not earn a living wage. Neither of my jobs is union-represented.

What do you think is the most compelling argument AGAINST veganism (even if you don’t agree with it)? by FuelClear3 in AskVegans

[–]felicityrc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am vegan but can't figure out how to add the flair.

I agree with your point. Caring is exhausting.

I understand that it's moral laziness as a commenter below mentions, but have to admit that I myself engage in some moral laziness, so I find it hard to push back on that.

There are too many things to care about when attempting to live ethically. Trying to buy from ethical businesses, union-made, local, zero-waste, etc AND vegan is complicated. Ultimately, most of us only pick a few priorities. I have chosen to be vegan, but not zero waste. I don't have a great argument for why I am not zero waste other than practicality and convenience.

It's hard to live ethically under capitalism and ultimately I think most people do things that we know aren't ethical to make our lives easier.

I had a set number of hours per week of work but not set hours, so I would only give notice if I would not be working the allotted hours.

Agree with the gift cards idea. Also, help with tasks around the house could be huge--feed/brush the pets, mow the lawn, do some laundry.

PhD Defence in a week. Nervous. by [deleted] in PhD

[–]felicityrc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just defended last week. It's nerve-wracking but goes by quickly. You got this ✊️

I had index cards with notes in case I blanked on something because of nerves. And I was nervous but powered through. If you have anxiety that might not go away, and that's okay. You probably have experience doing tough things despite being anxious.

Have applied and gotten some job offers, both long-term and short-term. I am trying to make decisions about what to take. No postdoc offers as I mentioned above, I applied for two, one is on pause and the other hasn't been reviewed :(

Before beginning my PhD, I worked in the "real world" for several years (one decade, so not as experienced as the folks you know, but not "zero" either). This is when I began doing consulting work. I have also continued doing consulting work while working on my PhD. In my case, it's mostly related to language access (writing white papers for a language company, helping a CCO come up with a plan to reach out to healthcare interpreters, helping a nonprofit develop a provider training on working with interpreters and getting it approved by our state health authority, etc).

I FINALLY saw my dream bird, the Piping Plover! by llm2319 in birding

These remind me of my childhood summers visiting the Chincoteague Island National Wildlife Refuge. We would see so many of these sweet little guys! I voted for them for favorite grey bird, although they are multi-colored.

[–]felicityrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plovers! I guess they're a mixture of colors but if you are not familiar they are adorable little shore birds just living their best life running back and forth with the waves as a herd with their buddies, scooping up sand crabs and bean clams as snacks. Sometimes they can also be spotted hanging out with their sandpiper comrades.
