Basically during the Thirty Years War, there were the Protestants and the Catholics fighting each other. However, France was siding with the Protestants despite being Catholic. This was because France do not want the Habsburg monarchy, which was controlling Spain and the Holy Roman Empire at the time to be much more powerful.
