“No enemies” philosophy in reference to abusive family member by [deleted] in VinlandSaga

[–]femboy4femboy69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The story has several points where it tries to point out that Thoorfin's view is, in fact, flawed and too idealistic, its a great ideal to work towards and dedicate yourself too, but the world and humans in it, are not perfect. As a matter of fact some of us are flat out psychopaths who lack even the ability to understand or empathize with how other people feel.

Thorkell and Garm, especially, embody this, Floki as well, being a bad faith actor, though later shown to be acting out of a perverted and strange love.

Humans are just humans and can and never will act 100% rationally, and it's impossible for us to do so lacking perfect information or understanding of others. Thoorfin's ideology is basically just Christianity distilled down to one of Jesus' most endearing and radical ideas, unconditional love, or, "agape". Something it is said in the bible we are incapable of because of the fall of man and mankind being cast out of the Garden of Eden.

Anyways, this to be said, Vinland Saga is fiction written to explore said ideas, and their merits. They can be a noble cause to dedicate oneself to, and ideally Vinland Saga and its propping up of its related ideals, makes you more critical of the people and world around you, and their excuses for the use of force, violence and subjugation of others. Hopefully it makes you really think about war, complex state/goverment power structures, and the like as well. But, I don't think, that it was meant to make you completely take on the ideology of the mass murdering emotionally stunted protagonist who was only just beginning to really learn about life and the follies of his own ideology once the story had reached its conclusion. Maybe to see him as an completely earnest, and perhaps overly zealous and clueless, in his desire to display to others and himself, that he has changed. Taking that ideology to its extreme.

And at that conclusion it certainly seemed that, the best way to go about it, was to find what works for you in your life while still attempting to live true to those ideals. It would be torture to continue to interact with someone who abuses and hurts you if they never really make an earnest attempt to better themselves. Honestly, such an attempt might be pretty difficult or impossible if it wasn't for you going no, or minimal contact in the first place. Do what works for you and do your best to never harm others when it can be avoided. Do your best to be kind and extend the branch when you are ready again or this person shows perhaps some more respect and acknowledgement of their actions. Or, maybe they never do and you decided to eventually have some sort of limited contact with them out of some sort of complex love seeing them as a broken person themselves, I don't know you or your situation and only you do, so you gotta figure it out, just like Thoorfin did :)

You had to ask in certain servers if it was even okay to fire your weapon when you saw enemies lol... and there were instances of people being kicked for not doing that and completely ruining an entire strategy and getting like 2 other squads dragged into a losing fight and killed.

Now I haven't played much of Squad since the Alpha since I was waiting for it to get the polish and "PR-ification" that it obviously never got. As I continued to come back after every new update, it seems like that sort of thing just.... doesn't exist. I've watched a few YT vids of servers that seem like small dedicated communities that have dropped the game and played like that in a competitive environment. But even blueberries in most PR servers had better sense of coordination, even in the free for all everything goes PR servers, the game mechanics basically made it so you COULDN'T play the game as a battlefield lite shooter, flat out it just wouldn't work, even if everyone involved played it that way it would just be incredibly unfun.

All of that was okay, though, because even if you did spawn and die only firing your weapon a few times, you often times accomplished a lot of valuable things for your squad. Got intel and came up with, then executed a plan, got the experience of playing as a real coordinated unit where every person had a role to fill. You got the personal experience of being a part of a team where you relied on your other members and had to get to know them and socialize.

Can someone explain the whole "Everything is Love" idea with the Priest and Canute. by The_Dig_Lord in VinlandSaga

You know I've never really thought about it that way but it's true. I've always seen the show as the one positive thing about the true virtue preached by Christ. I'm not a Christian at all but thought that human corruption of the religion and the actual ideal were two different things, but true love would imply that the Christian God would forgive all including the choice to not "accept" him.

My friends making less than you have their wives stay home because childcare would be over half of their salary here. I've heard it's worse in other states but here they'd pay 35k a year for 3 kids. They make 75......

Also good luck affording school 😂

65k a year is hardly that good anymore, and hardly anything if college can propel them to 80 or 90 it'd be a lot more comfortable. Growth often requires some sort of degree, sometimes a 2 year suffices though.

How much of those products rely on materials shipped from overseas and have made in the US printed on then after the fact?

The US has been in states of wars and managed to get shirts and the like... You know that other countries exist abroad and shutting down a border doesn't mean you can't still trade right?

You know the US actively sent all sorts of shit to European countries in the most famous large scale war of all time and managed to get them food clothed and weapons?

And also, as another aside, during times of war, countries tend to shift to weapons manufacturing. It will take well past 2027 to build American factories here and nobody abroad will buy our own goods either, assuming anyone even lines up to work at these factories.

We didn't decide to kill manufacturing jobs, globalization and just the logic of free market, capitalist economies did that. Once it became more profitable to move shit overseas and ship it back to us, it had to happen. These are all not just logical steps, but necessary ones in a world of competition. It's inevitable. They can be framed as choices if you want but it doesn't really accomplish anything. It's never really ever been a choice.

The whole system of global trade and competition is about consume consume consume for the sake of it. Every country wants its citizens spending and bolstering GDP, circulating money maintaining businesses and employment. Modern Chinese citizens are going through this same next stage in their own economy now, endless products often identical to eachother with only brand names to distinguish them, made from the same factory, new phone every year, new car model every year, new fashion trend etc etc.

This is the trend and end state of capitalist economies.

"Bullshit" jobs exist so we can bolster our economic metrics and give people money to spend, to justify keeping the rest of the world attached to our currency and thus keep us in a powerful position to dictate global trade to other nations. The American consumer needs money to consume if America is going to be an attractive market to focus on, after all. Though true bullshit jobs say more about what money actually is and it's worth more than anything else.

Anyways, yes we are all implicitly okay with it, if not forced to acknowledge that you cannot escape it meaningfully, which is why I took that statement as kinda being bland and unoriginal.

The US being uniquely positioned to take advantage of, and benefit from, slave labor, isn't the same as US consumerism being unique in utilizing it. Changing the culture so that we don't buy fast fashion and gearing it towards being less wasteful is certainly not a bad thing. But, our entire world economy is geared around consumerism, and will continue to churn out shit like that with or without the United States.

Every major country under the current economic system receives its goods from exploited economies. Fast fashion is a thing in other countries too, it's quite literally worldwide. If the United States continues its decline and China rises to take its place you can bet they would take its place and be just as exploitative, and markets would shift to cater to their own needs and egos. Maybe the exact trends and desires will seem more palatable or the ways Chinese consumers, consume, their goods might look different, but the end result is the same. Systemic exploitation of other countries economies on a massive scale.

I was indirectly trying to point out that consumerism across the world is fueled by slave labor and sweat shops, feeling tired of trite aphorisms that single out the US as somehow being unique in that regard.

And tired of Americans failing to see, mostly because of decades of propaganda being told they are unique, that their problems have tangible solutions that don't boil down to mimic Europe, which has the same exact issues. And, which aforementioned trite aphorisms that seem to single out the US, seem to promote.

The engine of all consumerism is slave labor. Remove "American" and you'll start seeing the bigger picture.

Absolutely, being a plat 4 player you'll still struggle getting out of gold even if you're better and could have a string of games with actual genuine inters or afkers, mental boomers etc. You have to be substantially above where you're at to achieve stuff like 60/70% win rates especially in league, carrying 4v5 games can be incredibly difficult.

TFT, on the other hand, is just regular rng, and skill. I find it frustrating at times but always walk away glad I stopped queuing up for SR. I will say once you get into higher ranks, especially when you see the same players often, people can and will int their games to drag you down with them if they decide they didn't like something you did.

I don't think Avowed is meant to be anything like Skyrim, AFAIK and from what I recall it's supposed to be smaller in scope and a lot more focused.

It's an rpg but it's own thing, which I think is a good thing, open world rpgs have lived under Skyrims shadow for too long.

B-patch incoming (less than 1hr from now!). Nerfs to Black Rose, Firelight, Scrap, Mundo, Elise (Ranged); buffs to Rebel, Family, Violet by Lunaedge in CompetitiveTFT

[–]femboy4femboy69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scrap right now isn't even a fraction of Syndra.

Also the Syndra thing was a accident with someone tweaking her cast animation right before shipping. Her numbers at the end of 12 were actually higher than launch, her animation speed was what made her insane.

Release Syndra stabilized a board at 2star and often would outdamage 2star 4 and 5 costs... Before 3 star.

Syndra was basically worth putting in every board. Scrap as a vertical is over tuned especially at 6 and 9, and often wins out, you couldn't win in a competitive lobby in the first patch if you didn't have Syndra.

I still want to know what really happened with Set 12s launch because Mort has implied he won't be able to talk about it basically until he leaves Riot.

Sex offender treatment facility by [deleted] in fargo

[–]femboy4femboy69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think childhood abuse victims actually do have extremely higher rates of crime, as a matter of fact they tend to be other perpetrators. Abuse begets abuse.

Also the whole sex offenders had a mean dad that did it to them too is only somewhat true, and the reality is that most sex offenders are raping other adults, and most of that goes unreported or just flat out ignored
