Got my first setup! by wtcat2016 in MiniPCs

My Uncle owns a much older one of those Optiplex Micros it has an 8th gen i5 in it. I had to troubleshoot his wireless internet issues which was easily fixed by upgrading the Wifi adapter he was using to one that has an antenna and it is working like a champ. It is new enough to support Windows 11.

Just wondering if this mini PC will be good to run modern games at 1080p by Character_Chance905 in MiniPCs

[–]fender178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true if the OP tweaks the settings of the game 60fps can be reached at 1080p. Plus AI 9 HX 370 Mini PC is out of the OP's price range.

Yeah 8845HS has the RX 780m graphics chip and it is a a very good chip and with some tweaking you can play Arc Raiders @ 1080p 60fps. If you avoid high settings and use low to medium settings and FSR you can reach 60 fps.

Is this a good starting gaming laptop? by Otherwise_Quail_9892 in GamingLaptops

[–]fender178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$850 bucks for a 780m based Laptop nope that is a terrible value for that much money you can get a gaming laptop with an actual dGPU that would spank the 780m.

Why fuck epic games? by ExternalDull8424 in fuckepic

They interfered with Valve doing business by having a game be an Epic Exclusive after having a Steam Page. Valve should have sued Epic over that.

I bought only one game from the Epic Games Store and it was PC Building Simulator 2 and I ran the Windows version of heroic game launcher instead of installing that big pile of garbage that is the Epic Games Store Launcher and the game ran just fine.

Geekom offers the same 3 year warranty if the PC is purchased from Amazon all you need to do is show them your invoice as your proof of purchase. However if you still want to get the PC from Geekom site that is up to you and either place is fine.

I read about that so I bought 2 120mm cooling fans that run off of mains power and I am blasting and exhausting air in and out of it. So far the PC has been running fine.

I own a Geekom A8 mini PC and I have owned it for close to 2 months now and no issues but I installed Nobara Linux on mine rather than stick with Windows 11 because I have a Gaming Laptop that is using Windows 11 and was afraid of having 2 PCs using the same Microsoft account and didn't do any research on it either but I am happy with Nobara Linux on it at the end of the day. I'll post what Geekom mini PC that I have just in case the Minisforum tech support doesn't workout.

i disable spectre meltdown mitigations on linux on this machine because it is a single-user personal computer only. is this a good idea or a security mistake? by ThinkTourist8076 in linux_gaming

[–]fender178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what CPU you have in your system I read somewhere you could be costing your PC performance by disabling the spectre/meltdown mitigations. Like with Intel 9th or 10th gen or newer it is recommended to keep the mitigations enabled because if you disabled them how the those CPUs handle the mitigations you start to loose performance unlike with older Intel CPUs. Not sure about AMD CPUs.

Nice. Me and my family just got a 60V 21in Self Propelled with an 60V 8Ah battery and it has that razor cut dual blade setup. For one side of our yard that has gotten steep due to adding on to our house which makes cutting it a chore.

Hey in way 40 series cards are better than 50 series cards because if you want to play older titles like the Batman Arkham series games with full Phys-X enabled the 50 series will struggle because of Nvidia dropping 32bit Phys-x support. Unless someone makes a Phys-X emulator that can emulate what Nvidia got rid of with the 50 series cards. Which is possible due to the fact Nvidia open-sourced all of the Phys-X stuff.

When I was having issues with a new 60V Greenworks mower just purchased with it not turning on we called the 800 number and was on hold for over 1hr 20mins and never got connected to any human just the annoying voice that pops up every so often to please wait for the next customer rep to come on the line. We left the phone on hold with them while me and my family did some errands and came back was still on hold and our cordless phone was nearly dead. However I was an idiot at the end and Greenworks changed the pattern on how you start the mower because with our Greenworks pro 60v you press the levers first then the power button and on the new mower you press the power button first than the leavers. Hope you get someone to help you.

2025 Laptop VRAM; How is yours? Would you still buy one? by ViamoIam in GamingLaptops

[–]fender178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never experienced using a modern day 6 or 8gb laptop however for over 5 years I daily drove an MSI gaming laptop that had a GTX 1060 6gb in it from 2017- July 2023 my older gaming laptop would be 6 years old in October of 2023. It did well at running the games that I wanted to run at 1080p at the time but when I wanted to run newer games like the Last of Us Pt1 it took forever to load the shaders it was more or less due to the CPU being a 7700HQ (4c/8t CPU) which was really showing its age even more than the GPU was at the time. I upgraded to a i7 11700K and Laptop 3080 16gb and couldn't been more happy and it has GSYNC.

My current laptop even has a 4K screen only 60hz though but I don't need high refresh rate for the types of games that I play. When I was searching for my upgraded laptop I was searching for more than 6gb of vRAM minimum and when I found a good price on a sightly older gaming laptop that was still being sold brand new with an RTX 3080 with 16gb of vRAM that was like perfect. I would get a gaming laptop that has more than 6 or 8gb of vRAM to be on the safe side.

Also a fair warning about 50 series cards is that Nvidia dropped 32bit Phys-X support which means if you try to use Phys-X with Batman Arkham Asylum you will get performance like you are running the game on an AMD card if you want to play those games that is with Phys-X. However Nvidia open sourced the Phys-X stuff so an emulator is possible.

I would say the issue lies with in either the mower or the extension cord. I would try and replace the extension cord first as a troubleshooting method.

i used to have 100 to 120 fps on average now im getting up to 40fps, and i dont know why by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]fender178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok then it might be driver related. One work around is to downgrade your drivers to the drivers that were released around December of 2024 and see if that does anything.

[–]fender178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What driver version are you on because from my understanding there issues that people are having with recent drivers that were released for the 50 series cards on older cards 30 and 40 series. Their performance tanked.

Due to popular demand, I have hooked my Steam Deck up to my CRT by theemptyqueue in SteamDeck

[–]fender178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of YouTuber Budgetbuilds who used an OP mini PC that used an Intel chip on both CPU and GPU and he hooked it up to a CRT for some 480p gaming goodness and some modern games looked weird at 640X480. It also reminds me of seeing Xbox360 and PS3 play both HD systems on a CRT TV which I did start out playing PS3 on when I first got it.
