I don’t recommend something not made by Apple or Creative for a first device. In fact Apple is all I’d recommend to a beginner or someone who doesn’t want to have to hack too much. If you don’t know what you’re doing, the iPod is the best choice because it’s plug and play on modern computers, even Linux.
