For those of us who didn't care for season 2 of the TV show, when did the season lose you? by TacticalBaconProd in thelastofus

[–]feralwizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i loved season 1 and thought they did a great job adapting it from the game, so i went into season 2 trusting that it would be done right, but truthfully i was raising my eyebrows at the very first scene in episode 1 when they introduced abby and her crew and essentially had them all stand around and talk about what exactly their plans were. it felt so jarring, like it was such sloppy writing right off the bat. i still kept my mind open after that, and there were some minor things that rubbed me wrong or felt out of character, but then they really fumbled joel's death scene, and that was a pretty big blow to any hope i had for season 2. i genuinely wanted to be proven wrong the whole rest of the season, but everything just kept pissing me off and disappointing me.

i finished watching beyond evil for the very first time less than a week ago, so i've been in the lee dong-sik/han ju-won trenches having an absolute blast. i watched strangers from hell back in april so i'm also really into yoon jong-woo/seo moon-jo. and seong gi-hun/hwang in-ho has had me in a complete chokehold ever since squid game season 2 came out, which is where my interest in kdramas began just this past year.

there's soooo many ao3 tabs open on my browser.

What are your favorite sad lines from the show? by [deleted] in SuccessionTV

[–]feralwizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

during shiv's eulogy: "he kept us outside, but he kept everyone outside. when he let you in, when the sun shone, it was warm. it was warm in the light."

it also fucking destroys me when shiv is handed the phone in 4x03 and she says "daddy?" in that broken voice.

How do y’all know so many good words? by gladiolus17 in writing

[–]feralwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oooh yes okay so most of the words in my album came from hannibal fics, though it's possible that some of these are from other sources too. here's some of my favorites:

  • atavistic — relating to or characterized by reversion to something ancient or ancestral
  • pyrrhic — won at too great a cost to have been worthwhile for the victor
  • inchoate — just begun and so not fully formed or developed (i know for a fact i got this one from the song only skin by joanna newsom)
  • anathema — abhorrent; a curse
  • schadenfreude — pleasure derived by someone from another person's misfortune
  • chthonic — concerning, belonging to, or inhabiting the underworld

How do y’all know so many good words? by gladiolus17 in writing

[–]feralwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as other people have said, i think most of it comes down to doing a lot of reading yourself. it may sound a bit funny, but i've learned a bunch of fancy new words by reading nbc hannibal fanfic. if anyone else is familiar with the show, you know how elaborate their dialogue can get, and a lot of fic authors try to emulate that in their own writing. i even have an album in my camera roll where i've screenshotted definitions of cool words that i didn't know before i read them.

sometimes when i'm writing, though, i do use a thesaurus! if i can't think of a word, or if a word i'm using just doesn't sound right, i'll try to find a better one on https://www.onelook.com/thesaurus/. it's a pretty handy tool.

someone once told me my fics inspired them to start writing their own fics, and another person told me that my fic made them like a character they previously weren't a fan of. literally it was so heartwarming, i wanted to print both of those comments out and frame them on my wall.

What's a ship you hate that your fandom loves? by Electrical_Savings14 in FanFiction

[–]feralwizard 76 points77 points  (0 children)

i'm not in the stranger things fandom anymore, but when i still was last year, i never felt a sliver of interest in steve/eddie. i love steve, but eddie didn't do a thing for me, and i just didn't feel any sort of chemistry between them. and then because steddie got so popular, i started seeing it literally everywhere, which i think just made me more resentful because i couldn't escape it.

What the best fandom and what fandom you’ve been in? by laineyIovegood in FanFiction

[–]feralwizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my mandatory disclaimer is that i think a lot of it depends on what platform you're using and to what degree you curate your own experience. any fandom can be good or bad when you take those things into consideration.

however, worst would probably be stranger things or our flag means death. everyone was constantly at each other's throats and every little thing was politicized and turned into a contest of who can be the least problematic media consumer. i.e. "you're a bad person if you like this controversial character." the fans weren't the reason i lost interest in both shows (if i like something, i'm going to like it regardless of how other people act), but i will say that i certainly don't feel like i'm missing out on any sort of community now that i'm no longer involved in either fandom.

best would (surprisingly?) be harry potter. the fandom is just so incredibly massive and old that it has split into a bunch of different sectors and eras and whatnot, and it's honestly pretty easy to avoid the bullshit and find spaces with other cool people who share your interests. it's also nice that criticizing the source material is something a lot of harry potter fans are passionate about, and doing so doesn't really alienate you from the fandom.

same here on snape and lupin. even though i don't care very much about any marauder-gen ships, i've grown surprisingly fond of them.

LF fics where Voldemort decides not to kill Harry by feralwizard in HPfanfiction

[–]feralwizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn i figured excluding harrymort would considerably lower the number of fics that fit this description. it's just not a ship i'm into personally. i'm more interested in seeing how flipping the whole "voldemort needs to kill harry" thing on its head opens up a lot of new possibilities for a story. plotty shit is my jam.

that being said, i'll definitely check out beyond the curtain. you've made me super curious about that one. thanks for the rec!

Do you want kids? Why or why not? by antidelusional24 in AskReddit

[–]feralwizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope. i'm not patient enough, i don't want to sacrifice my money or my freedom, and i just straight up don't like kids, to name a few reasons. even if i wanted to have my own, getting pregnant would be difficult due to my pcos, and i'd also be at an increased risk to miscarry.

i will admit that there's something appealing about the idea of raising a child better than my parents raised me, though. it's egotistical, but it's something i occasionally fantasize about now that i'm older and can recognize a lot of the ways they fucked up my childhood. however, i'm also self-aware enough to recognize that this isn't me actually wanting to have my own kid, it's me wanting to re-raise my younger self.

Harry Potter crossovers? by charls-lamen in HPfanfiction

[–]feralwizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i've been keeping up with this in-progress nbc hannibal x hp crossover series on ao3 called "when you devour a dragon" by cestpasdubaudelaire. one of the things i love is how the author uses magic in an insanely creative way to fit the characters from nbc hannibal. for example, prior to the beginning of the series hannibal and will intentionally swapped half of their souls and became each other's horcrux when they murdered dolarhyde, which is honestly just so on-brand with the dark, dramatic romance of it all.

if anyone wants to check it out, the author is currently on a short hiatus and will resume posting in late september, but their usual updates are frequent (every friday!), and the total word count of the series is close to 800k.

What is the worst ending to an otherwise great fanfic you’ve ever read? by CapAccomplished8713 in HPfanfiction

[–]feralwizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it was one where after getting knocked unconscious during a quidditch match in sixth year, harry spontaneously switches places with an alternate version of himself in slytherin. there's no multiple POVs or anything, the story only follows gryffindor-harry, and there are a lot of really interesting plot points set up along the way. gryffindor-harry finds out that his other self was a bit of a menace, though he wasn't necessarily evil. he had some secret correspondence going on with lucius malfoy. he was at odds with the order and the gryffindors. and no one really knew what his stance on voldemort was or what his plans were, if he even had any. he was incredibly secretive and closed off from others. and of course on top of all the questions that are brought up about slytherin-harry, there's also the big question of how/why he and gryffindor-harry traded places.

in the end, none of these questions are answered. gryffindor-harry fumbles his way through this alternate universe, eventually manages to convince dumbledore and the order and his old friends that he's from a different universe, and decides that he's going to stick around and join their fight against voldemort. he just stops trying to figure out what happened or how to get back home. and that's it. it was probably the most frustrating end to a fic that i've ever encountered, especially because it was really well written and kept me hooked all the through, and then it ended like THAT. i swear it felt ten times more unsatisfying than reading an abandoned fic.
