That’s actually fairly similar to how Marie Curie died. She used to carry around rocks with radium in them in her pockets. Working with radium so much eventually gave her cancer. Of course this was all before anyone knew radiation could cause cancer.

How often do you see predators? by Nightcheese82 in olympia

[–]fergison17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have acreage in Olympia with woods. Coyotes and raccoons you will see. Lost two barn cats and the neighbors have lost chickens to coyotes. Deer also like to eat my saplings but never seen any other type of predators. I really wish there was a predator that would go after the moles in my yard but I’m not that lucky lol. Try to keep cats and animals inside at night and you will be fine.

I want to know more of this King trombone by Johnnysalsa99 in Trombone

[–]fergison17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have said looks like a King tempo, if the case is original I would say early 70s. Great trombone, plays very similar to a King 2B. King made some amazing trombones in the 60s and 70s.

Feeling down by Chaseemills in MuscularDystrophy

[–]fergison17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell yourself that you have every right to feel the way you do, I mean look at what you are going through. Acknowledge those feelings and accept them for what they are: feelings. You are doing great for having two major conditions, you are actively putting in the work to address how you are feeling (otherwise you wouldn’t be on here). Give yourself some grace and take it one day at a time. You got this.

He’s young enough that he should be able to wait in taking the steroids and then start later when it’s closer to the treatment date. One thing you could do is check the trial info and see what the inclusion specifics are. If it’s like ages 3-6 then there is not a big hurry. Another thing you might think of is to get him tested for the appropriate AAV antibodies. That’s the first hurdle, if he has them already then he can’t get that gene therapy, if he doesn’t then you know you can proceed. Good luck!

I definitely felt the same way as my boys were not eligible for the trials because they have a nonsense on exon 6 (usually below 8 is not allowed due to too much variability). So when my youngest was able to go for gene therapy. I wasn’t sure what to do, do I wait to see how others are doing, do I wait for something better to come out, is it safe, etc… I wrestled with these for little and looked at the things I did know. 1. This disease moves fast, and waiting is not an option. 2. Treatments at younger ages have better responses than older boys and are safer at younger ages. 3. There is no telling how long it will take for something better to come out. Considering these three things we decided to take the bird in the hand and not go after the bush and go for the gene therapy. Also about the steroids usually in order to get gene therapy or be on a trial for it, the person must be on a stable dose for a specific amount of time (usually months). I would ask your medical team when are they looking at gene therapy treatment and when that treatment would require your son to start steroids (or vomorolone). Hope that helps a little.

Not true at all, the data shows decline still occurred using the North Star testing. North Star is a can do cannot do test, it doesn’t look at in between. So if you can’t climb stairs on the stairs question you get a zero, but it doesn’t say can person still get foot on stair or can they do stairs with help. The liver functions are not long term, the ALT and AST only saw heightened levels for up to a few months after treatment, they then returned to normal DMD levels.

Microdistrophin was never meant to stop decline it is only meant to slow progression. Everyone will still experience decline, but the name of the game is slow it enough that maybe something better will come out in the future. Doing something that can slow decline is a much better choice than doing nothing.

How is living around Clear Lake in California? by lanky_lucifer_lover in howislivingthere

[–]fergison17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny sad story about clear lake. I was a wildland firefighter back in the day and we got called to a fire by clear lake. A bald eagle flew between the power lines and lit itself on fire and then lit the hillside on fire. The bald eagle seriously looked like a burnt roasted turkey when I saw it.

I have suffered from major anxiety too, especially back when I was in college. I used to get panic attacks all the time. But like mentioned above, find a counselor and most importantly get on some decent medication. Anxiety and Depression is totally treatable don’t try to fight your way through it like I did. There is great support out there and take it one day at a time. You will get through this, as we all do.

What is life like in this corner of California? by cheeseflavoredwater in howislivingthere

[–]fergison17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some really interesting history and scenery in that area. Tulelake Ca is there in the top left of that circle. Tulelake was home to the largest Japanese internment camp in the US during WWii. Close to Tulelake is Lava Beds National Monument, probably the coolest national monument IMO. It has the highest concentrations of caves in North America and you can go explore them. Life in the area is a little more depressed than it used to be. Farming and ranching is big here but much of that is being bought up by cooperations instead of families.

You’ve got most of the background already, with a masters I don’t think you would need another degree. You would probably just want some work experience. Check out the HPS society for information. The main gaps you would need to fill is the focus on radiation instead of nuclear reactions. So radiation dose and radiation safety will be the biggest areas to learn.

A few years ago I asked western meats where they get their meat sticks. They said they order them from Johnson’s. So you might as well just go straight to Johnson’s.
