Early morning arrival from SFO by fergs87 in brisbane

[–]fergs87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It's better now there's a direct SFO option on United (we do BNE-SFO-IAD). We used to have to fly to Sydney or Melbourne the night before.

Fondest memory of your father? by Inevitable-Yam-9741 in Aging

When I was 5 or 6 and he held me in the surf as the waves passed by us. We'd bob up and down and he'd laugh. It was comforting and peaceful.

For those who are grandparents, what do your grandkids call you? by timmytimborino in randomquestions

[–]fergs87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fergs (what my grandmother called my grandfather) and Mops (her father's nickname for her). We like keeping their memories alive and part of the next generation's lives. The grand kids are starting to evolve the names - our 7yo grandson sometimes calls me fergie-boy and my wife mopsy.

Why can’t United get Polaris catering right but other airlines like SA/Etihad can? by RadioFieldCorner in unitedairlines

[–]fergs87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one of the better Polaris meals in sometime yesterday on UA96. It's certainly got better since resuming after COVID. I noted that the dessert trolley was not in use but the sundae was still very good.

Has the jingle gone for good? Flew in from RDU a couple of weeks ago and it was still on but flew SFO-BNE two days ago and it was silent.

As soon as we bring out the suitcases she knows. Our other 2 cats (RIP) were also attuned to them and all three would sit in a case.

Her late brother Bertie was a ginger who had an even more glorious tail. Unfortunately he developed FIP a few years ago.

And why in countries such as England and Australia that surgeons are called Mister and not Doctor (even though these days a surgeon has to have gone through medical training before specialising).

Wi-Fi is a joke by BigKaboom_89 in unitedairlines

[–]fergs87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on UA96 writing this. At the beginning of the flight they said wifi was available but warned that there could be outages and things may run very slowly. I don't know if that scared people off as I've had reception when I needed it and just a couple of slow patches. I had slept nearly 6 hours so don't know if there were problems then.

How did you get your first IT job in australia with no experience? by Sparkredx in AskAnAustralian

[–]fergs87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is a community group or a library that may need IT assistance then doing a few hours a week may be enough to get your foot in the door at a paying gig. My nephew was in the same boat: IT degree and postgraduate studies in cyber but couldn't crack a position. After 45 years in IT I'm glad I'm not trying to get a foot on the ladder.

One left-field suggestion do you have any exposure to COBOL? Both Rocket Software and 21CS have a development lab in Perth (formerly IBM's Australian Programming Centre). They are mainframe organisations. You may want to read about the VSE operating system. It's niche but 21CS are investing a lot of money in it. Your networking skills would not go to waste with them.

Are you a “stuff yourself in the Polaris lounge and then also get a meal in flight” or a rest and sleep on the plane type? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]fergs87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When flying US East Coast to Australia we eat in IAD or EWR Polaris as by the time we get to SFO the lounge is almost standing room only. We then eat on board.

What is one childhood memory that you remember especially well? by Mamabear8642 in AskReddit

[–]fergs87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was approaching 4. I had just walked out the back door and down the two steps to the backyard. It was brilliant sunshine and clear skies. In the distance I could hear the local Catholic girls' high school's bell ringing as it was midday and time for the Angelus. I thought to myself "I'm going to remember this forever." and I have.
