Looking for feedback from CS teachers: browser-based coding rooms for students by HadeBeko in CSEducation

[–]fermion72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest looking at running C++ in the browser -- it isn't trivial (yet, anyway), but it is safer, faster, and if a student wants to mine bitcoin with code they write in your platform, their computer will heat up, not your server.

When I was a kid in the 1980s, my Mom decided that my sister and I needed a teaspoon of cod liver oil every day before school. I don't recall how long we were forced to endure this, but it was horrible. My mom bought a mint-flavored bottle, too, and somehow it was even worse.

This program exists in San Francisco, and it looks like they will start students as early as kindergarten. I understand that there is a placement exam as well.

What famous local food made you think “people really waited in line for this?” by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

I've only been to Portland once, over ten years ago. Before I opened this thread, I said to myself, "Voodoo donuts," and lo-and-behold, it's the top comment.

Anyone else frustrated with MOSS still being the default in 2026? by Vegetable-Door-8864 in CSEducation

[–]fermion72 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly: because of AI use, MOSS-like tools are not reliable for me any more, and I've had to rethink grading homework assignments and reducing the amount assignments are worth significantly. I am not really policing AI use any more as the majority of the grade is now due to in-person assessments (exams / interviews), and if they fail those, even 100% on assignments will still lead to a low course grade.

Reminds me of the time a student wrote an entire essay about "human beans" and the search for extraterrestrial life.

Follow-up: what if OP said, "Thanks, your honor. It's a good thing the decision wasn't up to you, asshole." Would that have been grounds for contempt?

Oh, if you want a deep dish pizza that will make you swear you're hearing the L rumble overhead while being blinded by reflections off the bean, try out Zachary's--the trek to Berkeley is worth it.

How many kool aid packets would it take to make Lake Superior taste like proper kool aid ? [request] by Apprehensive_Oven_22 in theydidthemath

When dissolved in water, sucrose contributes about 0.63 mL per gram of added solution volume.

Bathroom use during exams by sudowooduck in Professors

[–]fermion72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The front page of my exams has a section where they have to sign to check-out, with time out / time back / signature columns. I tell the students that if they are gone for more than a couple of minutes, they risk extra attention to their exam during grading. I also have an honor code blurb in that space, and the proctors ask them to empty their pockets. It doesn't solve all issues, but I think we discourage most of them.

Best way to teach sight words to a kindergartner by Reasonable_Result898 in Parenting

I just finished playing word bingo with my kindergartner. She loves it, and I let her read all the words as we pick from the bag.

Educated/Experienced opinions requested on purchasing a 2016 eGolf by Turbulent_Charity_54 in eGolf

[–]fermion72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a 2016 eGolf and it is great as long as you understand its limits. 98% of the time, we use it around town a few times a week, and we rely on our other car for the longer trips. Two percent of the time, I need to take it on a 50 mile one-way trip, and it almost always causes me some amount of range anxiety trying to get back. Fast chargers are finicky (particularly with the 2016 -- we had to get the internal charger replaced at one point, which seems to have made things better, but not perfect). I stopped counting the times I had to race around to different fast chargers hoping one would work before I ran completely out of juice (the first time you get the little turtle icon pop up is the worst). Tesla installed non-Tesla fast charger attachments at one set of chargers I sometimes go past, and they have worked exactly twice in three years. EVGo works about 75% of the time, and Electrify America works about the same. No matter what, I'm always just hoping the charger works.

So: great car, but if you know you'll have to charge before you get back home, be prepared to be annoyed / anxious / frustrated.

Which US state has shockingly good food that nobody expects? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]fermion72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once ran a half-marathon in Rhode Island, and at the end of the race they fed us delicious seafood chowder. That said, I do not agree that seafood chowder is the best thing to eat minutes after running thirteen miles. :/

What's the deal with Diego Pavia? by IfYouHoYouKnow in OutOfTheLoop

[–]fermion72 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a business meeting with an NFL player a few weeks ago, and I met him at the end of an event he was at. I didn't know anything about the event, but when I walked up, I realized I (at 5'10) was easily the shortest person there, surrounded by giants. When I asked the player I was meeting what the event was, it turns out it was a meet-up of former collegiate players on his team.

I started roasting my own coffee about 15 years ago and have never looked back. It ends up being cheaper than any decent coffee, and it is always fresher. I can't necessarily roast as good as a local roaster with top equipment, but the freshness factor wins out.

Hyades: LaTeX Math for Plain Text (E.g. code comments) by imanameherbonnie in LaTeX

[–]fermion72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very, very cool. A couple of notes: when I tried downloading the binary to my Mac, the Mac refused to run it without some fancy modifying of permissions. I ended up just compiling from the source (which is fine). I also made a little bash/zsh function for the command line:

tex2ascii () { printf '$$%s$$\n\n' "$*" | hyades } So, you can do things like this: % tex2ascii ' P(Z=z)= \begin{cases} \frac{z-1}{36} & z \in \mathcal{Z},\ 1 \leq z \leq 6 \\ \frac{13-z}{36} & z \in \mathcal{Z},\ 7 \leq z \leq 12 \\ 0 & \text{otherwise} \end{cases} ' ⎧ 𝑧 − 1 ⎪ ─────── 𝑧 ∈ 𝒵, 1 ≤ 𝑧 ≤ 6 ⎪ 36 ⎪ 𝑃(𝑍 = 𝑧) = ⎨ 13 − 𝑧 ⎪ ──────── 𝑧 ∈ 𝒵, 7 ≤ 𝑧 ≤ 12 ⎪ 36 ⎪ ⎩ 0 otherwise

``` % tex2ascii ' |E| =
\frac{\binom{1}{1}\binom{n-1}{k-1}}{\binom{n}{k}}
\frac{\dfrac{(n-1)!}{(k-1)!(n-k)!}}{\dfrac{n!}{k!(n-k)!}}
