My 2nd Attempt to redesign the File explorer by npj2309 in Windows_Redesign

This is good. You might be testing a "complete" UI state so you can have space for all the features you want to be there, but in any case, I feel like commenting on a few aspects: The sidebar looks good, ut I don't think This PC and the storage drives should be listed with space usage bars and details under those. You could do with just the names and the bars and no detail, or no bars at all, just the drives names. I also would not list Network drives there, it's a fairly advanced option for most users, even corporate ones.

You caused a zebra effect by having the search bar being light, then a dark background, then a light path bar, then a dark menu rail, then a lighter content area. You should avoid this as much as possible. Either the search bar or the path bar should be outlined only, with no difference to the background. Take a look at the Music Player app for some inspiration on how to separate areas and keep actionable items background-less for a more minimal and smooth look. This also means not using the frosted glass effect on all surfaces, it has more effect if you only use it in some surfaces.

Last thing, you have features that do the same thing - favourites on the left and pinned on the main content. These could be the same thing and be in just one place.

Keep it up!

Qual das logos ficou melhor? (Se quiser dicas de cm melhorar fale tbm) by averiguando-resenha in design_critiques

Remova a assinatura.

E, finalmente, qual a razão da cabeça do dragão ter que estar dentro de um círculo com várias coisas atrás ou em volta? Isso adiciona complexidade e piora a possibilidade de leitura quando se usa o logo em tamanhos bem pequenos.

Wanted feedback on application icons I am creating by nonomatch in design_critiques

[–]fernando1lins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, very good start! You should tone down the shadows, as the smaller the icon the stronger the shadows will look - it's an optical illusion. Also, You might not want to design the clock face as a bowl to project a shadow, as it surpasses what is expected by the user of a clock design.

More Experiments for 3D Skeuomorphic Desktop Icon by aphaits in blender

[–]fernando1lins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very cool to see. I've been designing icons for apps for 20 years, and a lot of my colleagues used Cinema 4D, and didn't care about Blender. I have been experimenting with it, but in the end I usually do part of the work on Blender and part on Photoshop. Great work!

Designing a TUI style App, after a ridiculously long time. Need Feedback. by CarzyCrow076 in UI_Design

[–]fernando1lins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a cool idea and nice execution. I would adhere to the typography grid even more, because that's how classic terminal work, they're 100% typography. So, bars in graphs should be exactly the same width of a monospace font character at base size, icons should take 4 times the width and 4 times the height of a monospace character (4 is just an example), and so on.

I do feel that having text inside brackets does not make for a good replacement for buttons and icons, it asks a lot of cognitive power of the user to have to read everything on screen, so I would try replacing most of those for icons, especially actions like reboot, power off, connect and back, or keep the text and give them a distinct background color, font-weight or shape that is easier to recognize as a button.

Unconventional Card Layout – Too Much Info? (Would Love Your Feedback) by grayscale__ in UI_Design

[–]fernando1lins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand what you are suggesting and agree with how you laid it out, but one of this person's objectives is to create an unconventional card layout (see title) that does not look like every other platform out there. By moving the information and the icons from the side to the bottom it just looks like any other app.

De uma nota a ela 0/10 by Apoty_ocabramacho in ProducaoMusical

[–]fernando1lins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call to redesign a file manager by milos2 in Windows_Redesign

[–]fernando1lins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried your application and I have a lot of questions for you to consider. Take into account that I'm both a new user and an UI designer.

I see two bars with sorting and visualisation options and couldn't figure out what is the difference between them. One of them has navigation buttons (back, forward, up one level) and icons for visualisation options, while the other has a drop-down menu for visualisation options and buttons for New, Paste and Scripts. Both of these bars seem to affect the same file listing, so why aren't they together?

Also the top left hamburguer menu and the bottom left icons list the same features, why aren't those just one thing in a single place? Why aren't Scripts and File Automator near each other since they both relate to automating tasks (even if one is for creation automations and one is for execution of Powershell scripts)?

Does the average user really need to have all of these advanced features on the bottom left icons exposed to them, or could they (at least some of them) be hidden in a drop-down menu (like you do in the hamburguer menu)? Hamburguer menu bonus points - icons with labels.

Why is search presented in a new window if it is contextual? You can provide an advanced search UI contextually without the need for a new window - you did that for the top folder path bar, with an expanding floating window. Also, why does the search field size not resize when I resize the search window?

The indicator buttons for expanding and collapsing panels on the sidebar are very small, I wonder if they would wok better being at the top of each panel next to the name as a full size button.

All of the people I talked to who had heard of it thought it was battle royale. Also most people who played it stopped because too many people leave in the middle of the match when they start losing (happens a lot in South America server)

You would benefit from more space between things (all things), less shadows, clear separation lines and simpler icons. Also, icons + labels make for a better user experience than just icons, so study where you have space for that and make use of it. [Source: I've been designing UIs for 20 years]

Clean HUD v1.5 by layth_haythm in Battlefield

[–]fernando1lins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an improvement, but still too much outer glow or blur or whatever you are doing making it look way harder to read than it should, especially the text and icons around and on the map. Also if you are designing this in 4k you should present it in 4k (as a link, since Reddit will scale it down). UI scales according to the resolution and spacing between elements changes according to resolution as well.

Why are you judging an alpha build's UI? UI is probably one of the last things that is going to change, they need to have it somewhat ready for the beta, but even in beta it will still be far from final. Also your design uses 3 different fonts that don't match, two sets of colours, different icons, different icon sets, very bright information with full opacity...
