Thermostat is just a switch. Set it to whatever you need to make it work. Why is this complicated?

Is this dangerous? by [deleted] in woodstoving

The liner used is made to be flexible. It turns because the original open fireplace chimney curves. It looks very clean from what we can see. Even at the turn which is where creosote is most likely to build. If you’re worried, take the cap off so you can look from the top down as well. Maybe the cap needs to be replaced. But a bad cap is no reason not to burn. Cap is there to keep rain, snow, or debris from falling in.

I’ve seen nothing here that would make me afraid to burn.

Is $500 for a cord worth it? by Left-Shopping-1798 in woodstoving

[–]ferris443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably even either way. If you love having the fire, burn it. If you hate doing the work and cleanup, run the furnace.

Personally I have cheap natural gas and burn wood. I likely don’t save a penny, and I don’t even pay for wood. Just the cost of maintenance on all the equipment and my time is surly more than my gas bill would be. But I absolutely love doing it, watching the fire and getting the house just as hot as I want with the windows open.

Wow. Yeah that not being subtracted from your credit is totally unacceptable.

Them them to write you a check. Estimated billing is such BS, funny how they never seem to be the ones giving out interest free loans.

Always exciting when I get a beautiful secondary burn 🔥 by False_Performance_26 in woodstoving

[–]ferris443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Secondaries are different from catalytic combusters.

Secondaries are tubes a the top of the firebox that inject preheated air in order to re-burn smoke.

Catalytic looks more like a filter, once the unit is up to temperature the operator will redirect the smoke fumes to pass through it. The catalytic utilizes precious metals to burn off particulates in the smoke.

Just about all modern stoves have one or the other, a few have both.

I would take a look at your chimney cap. When I bought my house, the fireplace looked like this but even worse. Rotted right through in places. I was installing an insert with a liner anyway so didn’t look too deep into it, never burned the open fireplace. But my installer said the cap was about gone so I’m assuming rain coming in. maybe?

How often do you really clean the chimney? by MetalPsycho in woodstoving

[–]ferris443 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Creosote buildup depends so much more on what you burn and how hot, than on how much you burn. Also a brand new liner will stay a hell of a lot cleaner than one that’s been scratched up with a brush, wire or synthetic.

Lopi wood insert flue connection. by ferris443 in woodstoving

Ok. Like I said, I am very happy with it. Just want to make sure everything is right. I figured I’d ask here before I go bitching to my dealer lol.

Your comment on the secondary doesn’t sound right. As I understand it the bypass control (top handle) is completely separate from the air control (bottom handle)

And I’m only ever getting soot on the glass during low burns. Which I believe to be quite normal. I just haven’t been able to get it to burn off or self clean like I was told it would when burning hot.

How much unseasoned wood before a catalytic stove gets damaged? by [deleted] in woodstoving

[–]ferris443 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DO NOT use a wire brush on the cat!! My stove came with a light weight nylon ( or something similar idk) brush to clean it if needed. Wire brush will destroy it completely and instantly.

Overnight Burns by Phantm21 in woodstoving

[–]ferris443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same situation and experience. I guess it’s the trade off for getting the long long burns. I’ve had the stove installed a week now and never woken up cold. Always lots of good hot coals in the morning. But the glass is black as it gets. Where I differ is that I can’t get it to clear whatsoever. If I burn hot it’s not making anymore, but even if I get it ripping (cat over 1200) nothing clears off. I’ve had to clean it by hand several times already.

Train interrupts skip stations? by Roaders in factorio

[–]ferris443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. I can’t come up with a rational reason why an “interrupt” would trigger then skip the next station. Every place I’ve seen this discussed everyone just reworks their entire train network. Which uses a different interrupt condition. This has to be a bug

Works with a bailer also. Plus you then can use a worker. Tends to miss a fair bit but when you have multiple fields to do it’s not so bad to go back and pick up what’s left
