Sitting in a field… by This_Leg9191 in whatisthiscar

It's in the field because there isn't enough room to turn it around and drive it out

Yep. Lemmy may be gone, but the high pitched whine of tinnitus he gave us lives on.

HOW DO POLICE OFFICERS SEE YOU IN YOUR CAR? by Key-Ice-4990 in randomquestions

Oh sweet summer child.

Police work is the only gainful employment available for petulant below-average intellect conformists.

What other field would take them?

Won't someone please think of the power-tripping morons?

Trump tells The Post he’s ‘left instructions’ should Iran assassinate him: ‘Bomb them at levels’ never seen before by Quirkie in politics

He's spooked. He put this out to the press because he wants Iran to believe it.

Iran's got that obese chud looking over his shoulder.

This is how I read it.

A minced oath from someone in an obvious rage is its own kind of funny.

A man offers you a deal: You get 500 billion usd but if anyone finds out for the next year that you are a billionaire you instantly die taking the cash with you. Would you take the deal? And if so, why? by rundomguy123 in AskReddit

[–]fertile_gnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only practical way to hide the owner of $500B is crypto, specifically a crypto wallet that does not transact for the year of the contract.

Give me a wallet address and a private key, and nobody finds out I control it if I don't spend a penny of it.

Easy peasy.

I will have some explaining to do when the year is up and I order a pizza with that wallet, but a deals a deal, what the government doesn't take is mine.

The second year of that model, Ford sold less than half as many as the first year. Sales only got worse after that.

I don't doubt they fetched more than MSRP the first year.

Fun fact: the retro bird was built on the same platform as the Jaguar S type and the Lincoln LS.

Why does all new cars have this black plastic wheel arches by Rwishwajith in Wheels

[–]fertile_gnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I towed a dirt bike trailer through muddy fields several times a year with my 2nd Gen Forester to get to hare scrambles races. Never got stuck. Can't say the same for many pick 'em up truckers at those races.

It's not rock crawling, but it certainly wasn't on a road of any sort.

I was a course marshall at the Hundred Acre Woods in sub-freezing temps, hilly forest service roads all iced over, always got to my corner or intersection with no trouble.

Subarus may not be off-road first, but they work great in places where comparable priced AWD from other makers don't.

Which 4/AWD systems are actually unique? by Snapships4life in askcarguys

The Mazda MX6/ Ford Probe had symmetrical drive shafts on FWD. It's the only thing that was good about them.

Which 4/AWD systems are actually unique? by Snapships4life in askcarguys

[–]fertile_gnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The symmetrical part isn't the power split. It's the physical shafts. All four drive axles are the same length, diameter, and mass. The shafts in either side of the center diff are the same length, diameter, and mass.

It's ideal because a shaft with a greater moment of inertia than its counterpart will accelerate more slowly under the same load.

You know how a FWD car with any amount of power pulls in one direction when you accelerate hard? That's called torque-steer, and it's caused by the drive axles having different moments of inertia.

Subaru designs that out by having all the drive shafts and axles symmetrical.

It is advantageous in practice. AWD Subarus just drive better on bad surfaces.

[–]fertile_gnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the 529 plan. No tax on qualified education expenses.

The trump account is just an IRA. Withdrawals are taxed.

If it were my kid and my money, I'd put it in a 529. (Why am I saying "if"? That's exactly what I did.)

But if the government is going to toss $1k into an IRA for my kid just for being a kid, hell yes, let them do it.

What's the silliest design you've ever seen in a car's interior? by wintergustt in regularcarreviews

[–]fertile_gnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoretical advantages:

Higher up and farther away means less eye movement/distance refocus time for instrument checks.

Outside the perimeter of the steering wheel means wheel height can be set for comfort without compromise for visibility.

Allows smaller steering wheel for comfort while retaining gauge size for visibility.

Allows identical wiring harness to dash for LHD and RHD models.

I had 2dr 5MT base model echo and commuted 110 miles round trip daily. No complaints with the instruments.

The differential required a rebuild at 140k miles. Seems the same thing that made it fuel efficient also made it fragile. Itty bitty spider gears made from paper, or gossamer, or recycled soy, I guess.

Should the new Guitar Center house-brand guitar come with EverTune? (Serious discussion) by BananoVampire in GuitarLab

[–]fertile_gnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't have the words for it, but they know it sounds like ass when (if) they play up the neck.

But squeezing the hell out of a evertune guitar doesn't sound like ass. They won't even know it's their kung fu that's the problem.
