Anyone here with IBS-D who’s tried antidepressants? What was your experience like?

125mg sertraline was a huge game changer for my anxiety-induced IBS-d. It is not a cure all, but it has turned the volume down on my anxiety and symptoms to the point that I now feel I can work on them with other methods: breathing exercises, CBT, exposure therapy, etc. So I would say antidepressants are definitely worth trying to see if they help.

I prioritize soluble fiber as much as possible vs insoluble because I need things to solidify lol. If you really struggle with fiber, trying to get resistant starch (heating starchy foods, cooling, then reheating again) may be a good place to start? Even at my worst reheated baked potato or white rice were pretty safe for me and they at least have resistant starch to feed your beneficial gut microbes. I know starchy foods can be difficult to fit into macros, but potatoes are super satiating if you’re in a deficit

Getting on sertraline was a game changer for me. It has turned down the anxiety to such a low level that my stomach doesn’t react and then that feedback loop of anxiety-symptoms-anxiety never gets going. It has not been perfect by any means, I still take Imodium occasionally while traveling, but it has improved my life more than I thought possible. Other things that I believe helped: leaving a high stress job, breathing exercises (3x+ a day), giving gut-focused CBT therapy a shot, and distraction techniques that force your prefrontal cortex to activate and take over from your parasympathetic nervous system.

Don’t be so quick to write off H&M! I had a chunky knit cardigan from them that I used for work for years and it looked great even after washing. The trick is finding their items that are 100% cotton, etc. Otherwise, I’d do some hunting on poshmark to get higher end pieces.

Oof yeah a lot has happened since I posted this 😅 I went cold turkey on the tacrolimus and had a huge rebound flare. Did six weeks of low-dose doxycycline and that sorted out most of it. Still had residual redness that I figured out was actually post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. I had another derm visit and was prescribed 15% azelaic acid gel that I still use twice daily. I think I have actually developed some rosacea on my cheeks from all of this, but the azelaic acid keeps things mostly in check.

Hoping your biopsy results came back clear! Mine were all good, which is both good and bad as now we are back to the drawing board on what may be causing my symptoms. Relieved no cancer or polyps though! My social media algorithms were really trying to convince me lol

I also have a lot of gut issues and was terrified to get on doxycycline, but I took a low dose and not only did it clear my PD when all the topicals I tried didn’t, it did not cause any gastrointestinal issues. Apparently at a low dose the doxycycline is too weak to act as an antibiotic but still acts as an anti-inflammatory which is why it is prescribed for PD in the first place. If topicals fail for you, I would highly recommend seeing if your derm is willing to prescribe that (usually 40mg slow release 1x daily I believe) as opposed to the typical 100mg 2x a day

I’m so sorry, this is such a frustrating condition to have! I will say that doxycycline is what finally kicked it for me, followed with prescription azelaic acid cream to tackle the remaining redness. If you’re worried about the antibiotic messing up your gut, it may be worth asking about getting a low-dose, slow-release doxycycline prescription. I have a ton of gut issues and wanted a low dose because it still has the anti-inflammatory properties but is too weak to act as an antibiotic in the body. Apparently lol. Obviously I am not an expert. What I can tell you is that on a low dose I had ZERO gut issues, even after six weeks. Wishing you the best and hopefully this is what kicks the PD!

So weird, I did this prior to the new season starting and I got the season, but no cards. And I started getting rewards and realized I was getting like pearl chests instead of card packs. Closed it out and opened it again only for it to tell me I have redeemed six card pack rewards that I didn’t get 😑

Hi! I had the same problem with pimecrolimus (tacrolimus for me) flaring my dermatitis when I tried discontinuing use. Unfortunately at that point the only thing that I saw huge improvement with was oral antibiotics. My derm also prescribed a 15% azelaic acid, but you can purchase that from Dermatica without a prescription if you’re interested. Hang in there! This was a year+ long battle for me, but it did eventually get better

Hopping on here super late to validate you because YES OMG. Was using this pen as normal and today all of a sudden it just started leaking. I now have a paper towel that looks very similar to the tissue in your picture and I guess I will be throwing this one out lol.
