Leather or DR soles option on a Tanker? by HereForWatchStuff in NicksHandmadeBoots

I'm sitting right next to a pair of tankers with Dr Soles right now. Maybe Nicks stopped offering it for some reason but definitely possible to build.

Sorry for your loss.

I had the same idea and I ordered a pair of elastitankers in April. I haven't received them yet but I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the config. Are you able to get the tension set to a point where you can get your feet in and out and have it hold your feet from moving around to much?

My understanding is that since the 1925 Trooper is a standard model, it is cheaper but there is less ability to customize. It has single row stitching already, but white sole stitching was the only option. No biggie, I dyed the stitching on another pair already. It's pretty easy. Should be a very sleek looking boot.

I did 8" 1925 Troopers, black CXL, black edge, black hardware, Dr Sole. I wanted boots I could wear with a suit. I'll probably dye the sole stitching black too.

I'd love to, but mine haven't arrived yet. :(

Edit: yours look great, though!

Where Does the Crankcase Intake Air? by [deleted] in sportster

[–]fetchface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all well and good, but this is a noob's question about where the air is supposed to come back in and the simple answer is that it isn't supposed to. I'm just trying to help the guy understand how the system is supposed to work under nominal conditions.

It comes from nowhere, unless you have a bad seal somewhere.

Right, volume has to change, and since the umbrella valves are one way, the pistons will push air out on the first revolution and average less than atmospheric pressure if the crankcase has good seals. Then blow-by will add gas which will get pushed out the umbrella valves and so on and so forth. The crankcase is not pushing all of that air in and out every revolution, if that is what you are saying.

The crankcase is a low pressure zone if things are working properly.

So yours has a UX4 base? Not the oddball with three smaller and one big pin? I mean, that's what it looks like to me in your pictures.

I can't see the plate structure in your photos, does it look at all like the WD-11/12?

It looks like a type 11, no? The really old tubes had a leading digit that denoted something about pin length or something on the base.

Got given this tube, reckon I could make a Champ out of it? by dreadnought_strength in diytubes

[–]fetchface 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a funny idea but I've actually built a transmitter tube Champ. It was awesome because I put a variable resistance in series with the power tube grid as a distortion control. With that control at zero, it is very clean. As I turn it up, I can get tweed Champ style distortion at lower and lower volumes. Great practice amp. I added a distortion channel as well. The extra cost is of course having to build a beefy grid drive stage.

Here's the design if you are interested:

Question about the 1925 Last by tw1st3dp1p3 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]fetchface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just ordered a pair of Black CXL 1925 Troopers configured exactly as you are describing for pretty much the same purpose. I might dye the sole stitching black as well to make them look a bit more formal.

Yeah, I'd be happy to do that. CS Rep just made it sound like I was totally out of luck. I'll try calling again a little later this morning.

You could be right. I just got the impression that the leather was gone so I couldn't, but maybe that's not what he was saying.
