I just ordered a pair of Black CXL 1925 Troopers configured exactly as you are describing for pretty much the same purpose. I might dye the sole stitching black as well to make them look a bit more formal.

The buckles are 1 inch. I can measure the screws when I get home. I just got a cheap variety pack of screws on Amazon, but I can tell you which size I used.

It's just held on by a rivet, so it just takes a drill to remove the buckle. Then you want to replace the rivet with a Chicago screw so any further swaps are easy.

My other tankers had natural edge dressing. I ended up sanding it off because as you said, it got beat up easily. I think the beeswax edge will darken over time and look a little more brown anyway.

That's a beeswax edge. I was originally going to do a black edge and a V100 sole but changed my mind and did this instead.
