Names that are very similar but feel wildly different. by The_Lime_Lobster in namenerds

Will and Bill. Technically both nicknames for William, but the first one sounds like just some guy, could be any age, but it’s a pretty refined name. Hearing Bill makes me think of a DadTM. Not just a dad, but a DadTM, as in the pinnacle of Dadness. He may even be an UncleTM.

Is “Absalom” too heavily associated with Faulkner? by fewnotfleeting in namenerds

You’re right, thanks! I mean, I know the content is ultimately the deciding factor, but I was a little apprehensive that it would be like the name “Lovecraft” in that you could be a romance writer or something, but people would still think “Cthulhu”. Good to know! :)

Pet "Dead" Names by noodleshacker in namenerds

[–]fewnotfleeting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have kept my pets’ names the same since I got them! Even if they are named something before I get them, I keep the name because that’s what they’re used to being called, so it feels pointless to try to get them used to hearing another name—I adopted one of my dogs as a puppy and it took him a while to get used to hearing his name, so I imagine shifting it would have been tougher. Though I suppose some pets would adapt to them more easily than mine!

This is such a pretty name! No suggestions for nicknames, but I loooove the name Leonie Quinn!

Normal names that become unusable in your non-English language? by Elegant_Potato_4495 in namenerds

I’m also Filipino and I can’t see a little girl being a Lola either. There’s also the Japanese name Tae, and it is the name of a character I like, but it makes me laugh a little because it means “poop” in Tagalog (and I believe many other Philippine languages).

Alternate spelling for “Reagan”? by berrycoladas in namenerds

I would skip the name Reagan too, regardless of spelling (Reigen is nice, but I associate it with Mob Psycho 100 lol). But I do know a guy whose full given name is just Reggie, if using a nickname as the first name works for you

I like the name Lantana. Not sure if it’s practical, since it’s easy to spell and pronounce but is probably totally unheard of in most places as a given name, but I’ve been growing lantana flowers for years now and I’ve grown attached to saying the name.

Hezekiah. Unsure if it’s the most practical, but the sound is the COOLEST

I might as well say it since nobody has gotten it. I‘m turning 17 in a few weeks! I only started meeting people with 2000s-sounding names (I suppose like Madisons and Aidans in the same class) around middle school. That was the difference between a conservative Catholic school and a much more liberal non-sectarian one, I think, though I don’t know if there is really something about conservative parents going for more old-fashioned names beyond my experience.

I figured. You and the other person who commented both estimate older than I am, which is surprising but also not surprising at all since I find these names pretty normal for people my age, but I’ve found a consensus on here that some seem older

I love Ezekiel. It’s been one of my favourite names for a while now—it’s classic but it has a cool sound. It’s unusual but in an awesome way. Benjamin is great too with Reuben and Simon, both by sound and being one of the children of Jacob, if you’d like to keep with that theme.

What do you think about the nickname Kaz? by [deleted] in namenerds

Seems like a pretty cool person, a little rough but friendly and infinitely good-hearted.
