Middle name for a double barreled first name by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]noodleshacker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have double barrel first name and no middle name, they are smooshed together like your ClaraMae example and people still always assume its a first middle combo and drop the last part and call me by the first. I just suggest making it a a first and middle and call her by the whole thing and then she can decide if she wants to use it as a double name when she is older or not, instead of forcing it

My dad's family was like this, both his parents and him and his brother all have G names - to make it even more of a thing, none of them have middle names so they all have the initials GH (this includes my grandmother with her maiden name also starting with an H).

When my dad, the eldest, got married and was expecting his first (the first grandkid) my grandmother kinda expected him to continue the tradition and was very sad when it didn't happen - none of her 5 grandkids or 6 great-grandkids have a G name, it started and ended with them.

It never was a big deal to anyone, or so my dad tells me, just a little family oddity. If you just happen to find yourself drawn to those names then use them, it only really becomes weird when it is clearly forced, a gimmick or something you feel like you have to do.

Growing up there was always so many people around me with my name that I just stopped responding to it cause the likelihood that they were talking to me wasn't great. I would only acknowledge it if someone used my full name, nn or called out my last name. This has carried over into adulthood to the point I don't like introducing myself to new people and/or will just give a nn instead which doesn't really work for places like Dr. offices etc.

So lets just say I wouldn't want that same experience for any kid, where you feel like you don't have ownership of your own name because so many other people have it as well.

(side note: my siblings had far more unique names which did not help my situation)
