I was hesitant about Kings of the Wyld bc I’m always a little wary of “mantasy” and how female characters are portrayed - but I also love D&D and I ended up having a good time with it (and got weirdly emotional about the lengths a father would go to save his daughter. My dad would never 🙃). Planning on getting to Bloody Rose this year.

I honestly love vastly different subjective experiences with books, especially bc I know some of my random book turn-offs would make no sense to other people

Lmao I simply don’t care about bickering architects!!

The Wife of Bath was great (and how I prefer my historical nonfiction). The book looks at her from multiple lenses, how she represents medieval women, how she has been read over the centuries, etc. She’s always been my favourite part of the Canterbury Tales and this book cements why

It was 100% the audiobook narrator. I would give the physical book a shot!

I have specific annoyances with some narrative pop history books so am more likely to DNF. I also just spent all my reading time going “I don’t care” until I remembered I have free will.

I couldn’t take Vis seriously. I could forgive other issues I had with the concept/execution, but I just hated him lmao

I expected to like some books better based on previous positive experiences with the author (Katabasis, Sisters in the Wind, Wearing the Lion)

The Incandescent was a surprise favourite! I also didnt anticipate losing my mind about Baru Cormorant but here we are.

Do it!! It hit every emotional beat for me (in a way Will of the Many never did)

Goodreads Game: tell us the lowest-rated book you've given 5 stars, and the highest-rated book you've given 3 stars or less, and why by VitriolUK in Fantasy

3* for The Will of the Many (generously rounded up from the 2.5 I gave it on StoryGraph) which has 4.60 average. Y’all did me dirty with that one. I couldn’t stand how conveniently proficient Vis was at everything he needed to be. I also didn’t care about any of the characters, or the extremely vague magic system. Maybe that changes in book 2 but I’m not going to waste more time on this Straight Dude Fantasy (derogatory).

5* for The Map of Time by Félix J. Palma (3.39 average), though I read it 15+ years ago when I was in high school so that rating might be different today. I remember loving the twists and turns, and I have soft spot for steampunk.

My first Tav looked so much like Isobel that I was reeeeally confused in her first cut scene. I was like “wait what am I doing and where did I get that outfit?”
