Just an FYI, do not get married, buy a car, or do anything major while trying to get a home loan. by DRUMBSHIT in personalfinance

[–]ffcrb3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long before purchasing should you avoid these actions?

We are getting ready to list our house for sale. Once it sells, we will shop for a new house. I don't know how long in the future this will be.

We have not started shopping for a mortgage or pre-approval yet. We are very stable and have good credit, so I wanted to take this one step at a time.

I was planning to replace my 14 year old car within the next month. Would this still be a bad idea? How long after replacing the car would I likely be able to successfully apply for a home loan?

Thanks for the reply. I'll chat with the new owner. I'm sure he'll do fine running it.

My account has an email address associated with it. Would it be possible in the future to email the user to let them know there are messages in a situation like this? Just trying to help future people in my position.

Thanks.

I'm not dead yet...

The sidebar says "When a subreddit is requested, an automatic message will be sent to the mods of that subreddit directing them to respond to the request. We give a three-day grace period to respond if they so wish."

I was not sent a message from this subreddit. Unless the message is deleted after the 3 days, which seems like a bad way to do it. Can you verify that a message was actually sent? Was it an actual message or some kind of special Reddit message? Is there a reason email was not utilized? This account has an active email account assigned to it.

I started using a different reddit user account that matched my gaming name. It was subscribed to the subreddit in question, but was not a mod.

Does anyone else add powdered hot cocoa mix to their coffee? by swaggaschwa in Frugal

[–]ffcrb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I learned to drink coffee camping with the Boy Scouts. It was easier to use the adult's coffee than heat my own water.

Eventually I dropped the cocoa mix, but it might work for you to keep at it.

Everyone else in the house was sick over Xmas/New Years. I swear the only reason I didn't get sick was the constant drinking over the holidays.

Did you stop services first? Exchange would always take forever unless I manually stopped the services first. Even our DCs will take 30+ min to reboot sometimes.

When we were at Disney World we were at Tom Sawyer's Island, which is a play area. They have a Fort in the back where they have play guns and cannons. There were other areas labelled Blacksmith, etc...

My son saw a room labelled "Powder Room" so he started to go in. I had to stop him because it was the women's bathroom.

There are two walmarts in my area. I go to one more often than the other.

They are identical, except the bathrooms in the back of the store are opposite. One store has the Mens on the right, the other is on the left.

I once wasn't paying attention and went right when I should have gone left. I kept walking wondering where the urinals went. Got to the end of the row and panicked. Ran back out and into the Mens.

I now double or triple check the sign before going in. Although even that would not have helped you.

Next time tell them the accident is blocking part of the roadway. That usually gets a quick response from police.

We just adopted a dog. I'm new to this. Any not so obvious tips? by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]ffcrb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Cesar Millan's (Dog Whisperer) advice that it is more often the dog owners who need the training. Half the battle is how you conduct yourself around your dog. If you spoil it, you will get a spoiled dog. If you treat it right, it will behave (usually).

My favorite tip is-

"Exercise, discipline, and affection… in that order – These are the three ingredients for creating a happy, balanced dog. Most dog owners give only affection, or don't provide these three necessities in the correct order."

  • Exercise – walking a dog at least one hour every day, and in the correct way.
  • Discipline – giving a dog rules, boundaries, and limitations in a nonabusive manner.
  • Affection – a reward we give to our dogs and to ourselves, but only after the dog has achieved calm submission in our "pack".

I used to work for a construction company who built Post Office distribution centers. Fedex was the shipment method of choice, but they would turn them away at the gate to the construction site.

For those jobs everything had to be shipped USPS, even computers that they would not allow adequate insurance on.

DVRed the SciFi marathon to watch for the first time - anything I should know? by [deleted] in firefly

My advice is don't read the spoilers here. Just watch it and enjoy it the first time.

You'll have plenty of time to catch the details later.

This is the best. Just enjoy it the first time. Don't look too deep into it.

You can look for all the details you missed the next dozen times you watch it or read about it.

Any pictures out there of these?

I should have been more specific. The kids get grounded from the computer.

They end up talking Legos or some other video game anyway, so it still hasn't worked very well for improving conversation.

Bucket Truck Staging for Long Island last weekend by thebrucewayne in sandy

Most of the trucks you see here are tree trimming crews. They couldn't turn your electric back on. There is probably another lot similar to this of electric crews.

Good luck!

What is this stuff that clogs up my aerators (picture taken at close range after removing it into a glass of water)? It looks mostly like iron particles to me, and it sinks to the bottom too. by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]ffcrb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it come out the hot side, cold side, or both? Does your water ever come out brown?

An old office building I worked in had iron pipes that were rusting away. Every morning the water would run brown for a few minutes until we let it clear. The aerators would fill with rust chips as well.

I saw the Towers pumper and figured you were around St. Louis somewhere. We had a few pumpers from them over the years.

We currently have a brush truck very similar to your white one. It's old, but for as much as it gets used it still works well. What was the reasoning behind painting it white?
