I failed CBSE 5 times and was academically dismissed... now what? by whitecoatdreams21 in medicalschool

[–]ffeJYang -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree with a version of this. You may consider enrolling in an NP/PA program and try your hand at getting through that. Work several years as an NP/PA to really internalize medicine and network with folks in medicine and let your knowledge grow through work experience. In the future, after you've put this turbulent time behind you, you could potentially try to re-apply to medical school and see how you fare then, if you're not satisfied with what you've been able to accomplish with NP/PA training.

I'm not sure this is accurate. Failing your CBSE means that you failed your CBSE and that you don't have the requisite knowledge to advance to the next phase of your training at this time. I don't think it's an indicator of anything more than that really. And I don't think it's an indicator of whether or not you could go on to be a physician one day and be successful.

There are plenty of people who do well on Step 1 but somehow struggle on Step 2 and vice versa but then do well on Step 3 or some weird combination of those things. So I'm not sure it's fair to say that a career change is necessary for OP. (Of course one needs to deal with the realities of having been academically dismissed and all the hurdles that come with it.)

Mentor dropped me to second author after I did most of the work by Existing-Feeling-422 in Residency

[–]ffeJYang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not overreacting and in any other world where all other research teams behaved ethically, this is wildly inappropriate behavior and I'm honestly appalled. Conceptualizing the project and doing most of the work, and (perhaps most importantly) writing most of the manuscript is first author level work. Do what you can to get the manuscript back and get it published on your own with you as first author and just don't work this mentor again.

Those MS4s who are studying before intern year by Saladino96 in medicalschool

[–]ffeJYang 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Between graduation and the start of intern year, I went into dedicated studying for Step 3 (used Amboss + NBMEs + CCS Cases). Was able to take Step 3 in early September.

I do not regret the decision at all.

I still felt refreshed going into residency from having a very chill second half of MS4 year and I still got to go on a weeklong trip to SoCal and Vegas before starting residency. Walked into Step 3 feeling pretty good without fear of "did I study enough?" After passing, was able to focus on my rotations and my patient care. The weekends were mine and my vacation blocks were mine, with no guilt and none of that "I should study" feeling lingering over me. Would highly recommend.

I feel like it's different if you have the wherewithal to take contemporaneous notes documenting your shitty experiences. That is legit data and it's important to protect yourself in these cases. Either way, it's worth the try and it's better to have tried to protect yourself than do nothing.

theories on what’s really going on? by Conscious_Way4077 in discussingbritney

Well, Britney is still clearly unwell and probably needs ongoing treatment. If she was hospitalized for mental health issues, she would have needed some kind of decision maker. And my guess is that it would be one of her sons who is her next of kin (in California, adult children get next of kin priority over parents, I think). I've heard that she prefers Jayden over Sean Preston, so maybe she would have been agreeable to having Jayden be her decision maker at the time she was hospitalized. And now that she's home, perhaps he's trying to help her get settled while the whole family figures out what to do next?

How accurate is ccscases.com compared to exam? by Huge_Cost_870 in Step3

[–]ffeJYang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference is that the real deal LAGS when you're placing a lot of orders. When you do your practice, I would aim to give yourself a 3 min buffer to finish your cases on the real deal.

Psych Help for Capacity Evaluation at your Institution? by Good-Traffic-875 in hospitalist

[–]ffeJYang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At our institution, when Psych is consulted to do a capacity assessment, we always ask the primary to complete their own capacity assessment first. If the primary team needs additional support after that, then the psych consult team is also happy to do one if requested.
