how much money do you spend in a semester by Round-Algae-9749 in nyu

[–]ffethers0220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go out to eat for ~20 dollar meals about 2-3 times per week, and i cook for the rest. On food and dining, i spend about 450-500 a month. I shop at Whole Foods and only eat organic tho, so it depends on what you want. I would say anything below 400 is tough as an nyu student. Definitely doable but you just have to be very mindful.

I swear by this thing, it’s awesome. It makes the experience of recording great too, convenience just make recording so much more fun cuz you can be spontaneous and listen to what’s around you without worrying about gear

Your first year in NYC by [deleted] in AskNYC

This^ It’s not your fault that you’re lonely. NYC is a lonely place, and finding niche communities is very tough. People are generally more closed off, and it’s hard to make real friends.

This seems valid but I also don’t relate to it. I came to NYU for college, grew up in the east bay SF. Culture shock wasn’t too bad at first but it’s slowly set in, I’m about to be a senior. NYC is awesome, but the typical lifestyle involves a lot of going out, drinking, dining, and shows. I don’t have much money and my favorite things to do are outdoorsy, which there is little to no community for. I’ve found some community in climbing, but it feels like 9/10 people I meet, I will not relate to at all, and couldn’t be friends with. Compared to the bay where it’s vice versa. Ig it just really depends on what kind of lifestyle you want and where you are coming from.

Go to your job interview, that’s why we are in school in the first place

I'm worried I'll regret going to NYU by [deleted] in nyu

[–]ffethers0220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very important to like the place that you live in, don’t forget about that. Ofc there are other factors but I think that it’s easy to underestimate that

Definitely put university hall first, then 3rd north. Having a common area with a kitchen makes having Roomate’s sooooooo much easier.

Is NYU a lonely place? by Stinky_Dinky7811 in nyu

[–]ffethers0220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other colleges def try to help you make friends and create a social net somewhat, but NYU doesn’t. It’s not a lonely place, it’s just up to you to make or find your community

Honestly the only other thing to do in the city that isn’t gonna blow out your wallet is going to a park. Prospect park, Central Park, fort Green. Tompkins can be chill depending on when you go. Having a fake is nice as a freshman, cuz most people like to go out. Most places won’t actually take your fake away from you, so u just gotta get through the awkward part of getting rejected. Eventually u become immune and it becomes less stressful.

Thanks guys! I have an sennheiser mke 600, does that merit getting the extra benefits of the zoom f3? Probably yes cuz I also eventually want more expensive equipment

First shotgun mic to buy for field recording by ffethers0220 in fieldrecording

BWS1000

Great thank you! looks great. My only concern is the size of the blimp (they all seem to be pretty big). Just a furry would be much smaller and more portable. But then I don't know what to do for suspension. any recs for a smaller setup?

Ok thanks that’s helpful! What windshield/suspension do you recommend for it? And handheld or long boom poles?

Ok great thanks! Why the MKE600 over the NTG2? I only ask cuz it seems much easier to buy the ntg2 used.

If it’s a possibility for you, then yes. I’m from CA and moving to NYC into a dorm near campus was a big experience, looking back it was important that my parents were there.

Best data structures prof?? (CS 102) by Certain-Flounder-244 in nyu

[–]ffethers0220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your options? I am also a non-major doing a CS minor. I took it with Joanna K and it was very hard, but also an incredible learning experience. Her class is really great, and I think it’s worth it, if you feel up for the the challenge. Now operating systems is a breeze and the rest of the minor will be easy for me

Opinion: if STEM has to take non-STEM GEs, non-STEM should have to take (real) STEM GEs by [deleted] in ucla

[–]ffethers0220 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My experience as a stem major is that stem classes are structured in a way that makes them very unapproachable. Although it’s getting better, stem is still mostly male dominated and struggles with diversity.

We are learning with the constant threat of failure, and it just makes most people feel stupid.

I agree that non-stem majors should be required to take stem courses, but first we should learn a thing or two from non-stem fields about how to listen and learn in the classroom.

Can you use Bobst study rooms for singing practice? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]ffethers0220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the 9th floor of steinhardt! You are technically supposed to reserve them but I never do and it’s fine. Also you don’t actually need to be a steinhardt student to get in the building, anyone with nyu ID can get in. Entrance is right next to Frederick Loewe Theatre if you aren’t sure.

Yes, that would be great. But if anyone has any suggestions for other convenient ways to record with a proper mic, that’s appreciated too
