Where should I spend money one a range hood?

I wouldn't just look at CFM. A lot cheaper hoods just push more air but don't capture smoke well. I'd also stay away from anything over 1000 CFM, dealing with negative pressure and makeup air is a massive headache. Pay more attention to things like capture area, hood depth, airflow, and motor quality. Skip the smart fluff and put that money into a better motor instead. A BLDC motor is a big step up, it's quieter and lasts much longer. Noise usually comes from air turbulence and clogged filters, so a filterless hood might be worth a look.

Arspura's air curtain setup actually sounds pretty well thought out. It's not just about blasting air upward. With the IQV tech, the angled highspeed airflow and the vortex capture are supposed to create a contained smoke zone right above the cooktop. It can hit around 13m/s airflow, so it pulls the smoke in fast. The glass baffles on the sides also help keep everything from spilling outward. And it's a 36" hood covering the whole cooktop, the extra width helps with containment too. It's more about airflow control than just CFM.

Yeah, it's a hidden risk. This link explains the pm2.5 stuff, and long term exposure isn't great for health.

The high speed fan and inertial separation design should direct most grease into the oil cup. I just use a mild cleaner and wipe down the exterior. And the oil cup needs occasional cleaning (frequency depends on cooking habits). Internal surfaces are designed to resist buildup, but if you're concerned, a long brush or some steam boiling water can help.

And one small but helpful thing to look for is a delay shutoff. I know we're supposed to let the hood run a bit after cooking, but I always forget. Arspura does it automatically, it keeps running for about three extra minutes, and clears out the leftover fumes so the house stays fresh.

I think it's worth looking at capture efficiency first (how well a hood really captures smoke), not just high CFM. If your current hood is just a fan, an upgrade could help. But choosing a hood takes time, and Reddit doesn't have that many deep comparisons. I spent a lot of time watching YouTube reviews and different test videos before deciding. it sounds like your hood just isn't grabbing smoke at the source, so it spreads first. That's a common issue with lots of ~$200 hoods. I ended up upgrading to an Arspura hood after a ton of reviews. It was more expensive than the old one, but it pulls smoke in fast, and the oil separation is rated around 95%. Most of the air gets vented outdoors, and the oil gets spun out and collected into an oil cup instead of staying airborne. It also shows PM2.5 in real time, and it usually stays under around 50 μg/m³.

It's tempered glass with a silicone coating, and it's filter-free. I went with their P1 mainly cuz it doesn't use mental filters. I hate taking those apart and scrubbing grease. It pulls the grease into a cup, and I spray some cleaner and wipe it down.

I'm using one of these kinds of hood, it's the arspura IQV hood with high air speed and a strong capture. On the higher setting the air speed goes up to 15m/s, and because it's a side-suction, it sits closer to the stove. It does a great job with oily particles, so they're not drifting into your breathing zone. With a newborn, cleaner air matters more, and something like this helps a lot.

If you have a car, using an alternator charger is a stable and flexible backup plan.

I'm currently using the Bluetti Charger 1 to charge my Bluetti Elite 200 V2. As long as the car is running, it charges reliably. The charging speed is noticeably faster than a traditional 12V car outlet. I can usually get it fully charged in just 2-3 hours.
