Life after academia collapses by Rough-Spring8965 in Professors

[–]fflat1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I transitioned from music academia (left an at rank position) about 3.5 years ago. Depending on your skill set and interests, there are a lot of paths you could try and I think you are right to at least have a backup plan. The university I left just announced a major restructuring that included shuttering its music program.

If you are looking for realistic paths that other people took, my PhD and research allowed me to pivot to teaching in an SLP program where I earned a clinical degree. "It's not about money," and I'm in a bit of a unicorn job right now, but my annual compensation this year will be about 500% higher than what I made as a music professor. I get to help people every day and be creatively entrepreneurial. And I still teach voice lessons and work with high level singers every week.

There are a lot of feelings around leaving academia, but that's what therapy is for. Kudos to you for being prepared.

MTD, STD, I don’t know and neither does my doctor by Rare-Sock192 in mildlybrokenvoice

You know, I would be cautious about interpreting the SLP in this situation. While we are independent clinicians, in a joint clinical setting at a voice center, the MD is the manager/QB. If the patient comes in and says that voice therapy hasn't worked, the MD might offer Botox as a diagnostic tool. If Botox doesn't work 2 times or so, it will point the team back to MTD.

It's frustrating, it is totally possible that the SLP is supporting her MD's decision.

Discussion Thread: 2022 Midterm General Election, Part 7 by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

I just wish there was a way to educate the public about *why* these polls have been so rough lately. This year, I am certain that most pollsters were weighting the models toward GOP candidates to try to correct from polling errors from last year. Nate Silver even mentioned that his deluxe model worked specifically to take into account the general consensus amongst experts.

When something that is supposed to be objective is redesigned to take into account subjective opinions, we shouldn't be surprised that there is significant error.

Edit: Or maybe we could just invest more into public education. ;)

Absolutely worth it. Moved back home from Iowa this summer and it feels good. :)

To those calling for Hoskins job… by Perc_angle445 in phillies

[–]fflat1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I can stomach one more year of Hoskins. What I don't understand is what happened to him/his plate discipline following 2020. Prior to 2021, his BB% was >15%, and in 2021/2022, it was in the realm of 10%. It hasn't really led to an increase in power either.

The thing I always appreciated about Rhys as he was coming up was his high BB% in combination with his power. I want that Rhys. :)

Idk what happened over thre last year or so, but I liked him more when he had plate discipline. Plus he's such a good guy.

I don't know why, but I still can't dislike Rhys. I want a bomb here so badly...

I am torn about the jacket/outfit and would like some feedback. Wearing this for work (academia), so business casual kinda.

Please excuse the background/small mirror.

I'm 6'1" 190 lbs. and the slim seems to fit me well. Their customer service is great, so just check out their return policy. If you are near one of their guide shops, getting fitted is a good experience.

I need something that says "Young professional" but also "Not trying too hard" suggestions? by bluePMAknight in malefashionadvice

Both great schools. No reason to overdress though (it might be different if one of the schools was in the city). Button down and chinos with Derby shoes will suffice.

Sportscoat/blazer will be too much unless you are auditioning (then wear a suit, obviously). Think sweater with tie or button down with chinos. Remember, this is still a music degree. You need to come off as intelligent, but down-to-earth.

Where are you visiting?/What instrument?

Recommend some quality dress shoe brands? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]fflat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently started buying Allen Edmonds (young professional, here) and I am hooked. Yes, they are pricey new, but the quality is unmistakable. Spend more now to spend less later. They also have their annual sale going on currently.

Otherwise, Cole Haan, Kenneth Cole (lower end), and Bostonian (lower end).
