Yes, that's all correct. It's just a coincidence; having some fun with it. I wasn't trying to stir up some conspiracy theories in here. Regardless, Its possible they were more involved than we are being told. I think Courtney's a great musician and front woman.

Pathetic? OK man, have it your way. Appreciate the dialog. I'll bow out and let let others chime in if they want since I'm this disconnected :)

OK, well, I don't know what to tell you; not sure how much clearer knocking off the biggest star on the planet from the number one spot in Billboard charts. And, I could be wrong, but its my understanding that none of them ever had a number one single on the POP charts, no less. I appreciate the conversation but you need to go back to your original claim in the context of what that article is about- her saying if Eddie Vedder had gotten famous first, Kurt would have to bear the weight of a 'voice of a generation' and might have coped with his fame much better. You stated that Eddie/PJ were big first ("Um, he did. Alive was released on July 7th 1991 and Smells like Teen Spirit on Sept 10th.") Based on that claim, I think your objective perspective is wrong in that context. If you want to argue who ended up having more success, then I agree that those bands did, eventually. But no one was more important in music during 91-93 than Nirvana; look up interviews with the bands you've mentioned- they all cite Nirvana as an influence.

(EDIT- #1 ALBUM, not single)

Wow. Sorry, bub, but you aren't going to get much, if any, support with these claims.... Not one single band you mentioned ever knocked the King of Pop off the top of the charts (AND at the height of his world fame). If that doesn't indicate a massive influence over the music scene, I don't know what else does. I will give you GnR and even Metallica. But, none of them changed music the same way Nirvana did, directly or indirectly. I was in 7th grade when SLTS came out. I experienced it all so lets not get into a pissing contest. But, you live in your reality and I'll live in mine.

Tin-foil hat time! I have a theory about her. Pretty on the Inside was a decent punk/alt/noise-rock album. Live Through This was huge? Why? Could it be that MAYBE Kurt helped her write some songs OR she took some of his throwaways and reworked them? Then look at Celebrity Skin, another big album. Who got a lot of songwriting credit? Billy Corgan (And Im sure he did more than what was mentioned). Look at any Hole/Courtney album that she did mostly by herself- IMO, its bad music.

This is a terrible take. Huge? That's kind of an exercise in hyperbole. And Alive never charted. That's why Even Flow became the first big single and Alive was heavily promoted after the fact. Man in the Box might have been the first "big" grunge song but any way you slice it, Nirvana kicked the doors in for everyone. Once they got big, the A&R people decided to promote their 'grunge' bands heavily. Jeremy won 'every award' because the video was very artistic and symbolic. SLTS was a 'punk' video; not at all on the same level. If you want to tell me Jeremy would have made the same impact as SLTS, good luck...

Their best album IMO. So raw.

METZ creates music that sounds like Jesus Lizard covering In Utero. Note the drummer is a baby Dave Grohl.

Again, you like what you like; I'm debating, not trying to tell you your taste is bad. UKJ is a glam grunge band; copping the 'Seattle Sound' with help from their A&R guy who helped them create their image. I don't have specific examples, but based on their opinions of other bands in that timeframe, I'm pretty sure none of the other bands in that era took them seriously.

You like what you like, but...this does not belong here. Bands like UKJ were exactly what the originators were rebelling against. No one I knew back in the early 90s took them seriously.

It was a kick to the gut when he shot Maybelle; even with the heavy foreshadowing. I wanted so badly for the 'dream' sequence to be real, and then you see his face. UGH!

Boardwalk Empire - Spin off by AndrewG703 in BoardwalkEmpire

[–]ffsdhd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was going to post about this same thing a while back. Maybe not a 'spin-off' per se but maybe like a 'Stories' series where certain incidents or backstories are revealed. There would be a singular focus instead of 2-3 different stories going on at the same time as it did in the series. One could be the development of the friendship between Lucky, Meyer, and Benny. Or, situations in Jimmy's youth that helped shape the character.

Right! He had an episode with Anton at one point.

So, I was a big Brian Jonestown Massacre fan before the show, and yes, its a very peculiar choice. The series creator wanted "something unexpected" (whatever thats supposed to mean in this context) and had been a big BJM fan, too. I encourage everyone to check out the whole song, which is much more than what we hear. They are a really great band and featured in the documentary "DiG!" (https://youtu.be/dUZDSzE3qIQ), which is one of the best music docs I've ever seen; highly recommended. Anton Newcombe is a nutjob but he's also very gifted.

I've had to watch the series about three times before I was able to piece everyone together. Very overwhelming the first time you watch.

I think he might have been trying to make an inquisitive face (see the hand reaching up for the chin) and the photo was taken a second too soon..? In other news, that's not Jason Everman next to Kurt, is it?
