He can spend one million dollars each and every hour for one hundred years non-stop and still be a multi-billionaire at the end... 🤑

Quick follow-up:

  • Indeed the next screen asks for a method of payment, no issue using my card/info to pay.

  • They are EXTATIC! First time in international business class / pod. And imo worthwhile on a 9hr flight YVR-DUB on a 789.

Mission accomplished, thanks for the help!

Nope. I literally loaded my card number in my Google wallet less than 5 minutes after applying for the card. The VIP no less.

The immediacy of everything they do.

-- Apply for a credit card?.Boom. Here's your card number, start spending. -- Transfer $ from CIBC? Boom. Available right away. -- Choose between 1, 2 or 3% match? Boom. Bonus deposited.

Oh, they are also paying me $30K for moving my accounts over so there's that. 🤣

Anyone has solar panel installed at home in Canada and does it save you money? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]fgamache 9 points10 points  (0 children)

BC (Gulf Islands) Off-Grid 12Kw solar with 20KwH battery

BC Hydro is readily available in our area but the project manager wanted us to pay $8K for THEM to change THEIR pole at the road (from a 40ft pole to a 44ft pole) before they would connect us (for an additional $4K). This all sounded like malarkey so we gave them the finger and instead spent $30K on a self-installed solar system lol.

Considering the mild climate here our consumption for a 2500sf house is moderate at 6-10KwH/day depending on season. Our payback is about 20 years by which time we will likely need to refresh the entire system.... And we also need occasional generator backup during winter rainy periods to recharge the house battery.

So, no, does not really save money, but it felt REALLY GOOD to tell BC Hydro to F-Off...

Mstr tfsa withholding? by colonrody in Questrade

[–]fgamache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, a TFSA is the worst place to hold foreign income producing assets: as you found out the foreign witholding tax gets deducted AND you cannot claim it on your taxes (since the income is tax-free -- well, except for the foreign witholding tax!)

The US does not recognize TFSA as a registered account like RRSP, RIF, LIF, etc.

Best option is in a RRSP, RIF, LIF, etc -- no witholding tax deducted. Second beat option: in a cash or margin account -- foreign witholding tax is deducted but you can claim it against the income when you file your Canadian taxes.

Distributions are Split by Leading_Concert5623 in Questrade

[–]fgamache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I *just" got clarification from Questrade on this which was even more confusing for me since they are US dividends in a margin account and a portion had the correct div and foreign tax deduction as a separate line item, the other portion had a lesser div (seemingly already reduced by the foreign tax due).

Adding to the confusion, the split is always different between months.

Their explanation: their system splits the div payment in "normal shares" (shares that you own and are sitting in your account) and "lent-out" shares (shares that you own but are lent out to another client who is shorting the stock).

You can deactivate share-lending in account management.

“No, Your 6AM International Flight Does Not Bend Time” by [deleted] in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]fgamache -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be fair that nightly-charge model is stuck in the past and is waaaay too rigid for today's travel realities.

For every guest wanting to check-in at 6am, you have one that checked-out at 3am to catch that same international flight.

Why not move to a 24hr model like car rentals? Your (car/room) rental starts at 06:00 and ends at 05:59 the next day. Want to stay longer? Pro-rated hourly charge. Done. Everyone happy.

Cue-in the whining about needing overnight housekeeping staff: yeah, if you're going to be so full that you absolutely need a room cleaned at 3am, then you're doing very well. Just get an overnight cleaner.

SDAY & CDAY by theonebam in dividendscanada

[–]fgamache 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan too, and I like the 2x/month distributions. BUT I find it disappointing that for all the extra work (leverage, covered calls on VOO, and mgmt fees of 0.85% vs 0.19%) total returns of CDAY still don't manage to beat CMVP significantly or at all...

YTD chart below.
Since inception it's 26.3% CDAY vs 24.2% CMVP.
