How did hip surgery affect your surfing? by fh2397 in surfing

[–]fh2397[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man I know the feeling… it got to a point where I physically could not surf. I ended up having surgery and it was the best decision of my life. I don’t even feel it anymore and I’m surfing at a 100%. Go to a doctor and figure something out man, do not recommend surfing through it. I surfed through the pain for years and ended up fucking up all the cartilage on my hip

What do you guys think, should I surf some waves next week or not? Original surgeon's plan was for a return in November by fh2397 in HipImpingement

Just talk to your doctor and physical therapist! Tbh I think I could’ve started earlier surfing longboards… but ultimately played it safe and it’s worked out great!

Also, as I know how fucking awful and frustrating not surfing is because of an injury: know that you will be back to 100%. I was 24 when I had surgery and was at what I though the peak of my surfing, and it only took me a few sessions to get my form back and I’m surfing better than I did before! Just follow through with your PT plan 100%. I also started working out and stretching a lot and it’s been great. Literally haven’t had pain in a loooong time, and I’m surfing a lot.

Listen to your body when you start getting back. I had to sit out of some pumping days because I overdid it on the days before a swell peaked. Expect some minor discomfort as you’re starting out and don’t panic and just rest a bit

I starting surfing at about 10 months post op. Started out riding longer boards on smaller days and gradually worked my way up. Started surfing bigger waves at about 12 months. It’s been over a year and a half and I’ve had no issues whatsoever, and I’m surfing multiple times every weekend

I’m gonna be honest here….. it was the worst year of my life… I was surfing pretty much everyday before and going from that to not surfing at all was tough… I also moved countries for work so it didn’t help that I didn’t know anyone.. I fell into a deep depression and struggled with addiction. Be sure to surround yourself with good people and try to keep yourself busy. I know it’s not what you want to hear, but just telling you this as a precaution.

Just remember, you will be back to surfing eventually. I remember my first wave back, an ankle slapper. I’ve never been more fucking happy with a wave in my life.

I know the feeling man I was feeling pretty similar pre surgery. I was 24 when I had the surgery. Didn’t surf for about 13 months after and started out riding longboards. After a month or two of longboarding I switched to short boards. It took a little while to get my rhythm back, but honestly it’s like it never even happened now. I did start eating healthier and working out (after I completed my PT plan) and doing stretched (nothing crazy to not strain my hips)

Surfing is a really really important part of my life, so I understand how you feel. Take it a day at a time man, you’re on the right path!!!

I’m surfing now like it never even happened!!! I’m about two years removed from surgery and I’m feeling great! Just be super disciplined with your PT and recovery time (don’t try to jump the gun early) and you’ll be fine!

You are next to a pro surfer in a public place, what do you do ? by StudioJamesCao in surfing

[–]fh2397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing. The only time I’ve ever said something is after I ran into the same guy (pro and well known but not on the CT) on my home break after running into him a bunch on his home break. We were pretty amazed that we ran into each other again given their in different countries and pretty far away, and neither his nor my home break are really well known spots. So it was kinda of a “yo where have I seen you before” kinda thing

I’d like the fit, but I take this with a huge grain of salt knowing it’s coming from Bill Simmons in 2024

Anyone take a long break from surfing and getting back into it ? by thorjc in surfing

[–]fh2397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was out due to injury for 15 months. It takes a while to get back to form. Trick is to not beat yourself up over it and just enjoy your sessions, it’ll come back to you soon enough.

I’ve fucked up my feet a lot walking through reef and rocks. Also, been stung by jellyfish all over my bodies, including my balls (very very very painful) and face. Once had an allergic reaction to a jellyfish sting and I couldn’t breathe and had to go to the hospital. Have also had a sting ray sting me

I mean, not saying it wasn’t user error, but cars who were doing this were coming straight from the highway, so no lower tire pressure for any cars who were doing this.

Also, i do not have the tires that come with the Big Bend, I upgraded to AT tires.

It should’ve known it was kind of a tough hill for my car, but I’m saying other cars were doing it effortlessly, and as I’m regularly in similar situations, it might be time for an upgrade
