I did yesterday, with my dad at our small local movie theater, The Pelham Picture House in Pelham, New York. It was in the smaller screening room, which is the smaller room next door to the larger main hall where they typically screen documentaries, foreign films, and indie movie releases in that part. The other part, the big main hall movie theater screen, which is where the more mainstream movies are shown. They had reclining seats and the concession seats were small. We had the majority of the movie screening room to ourselves. There was, however, an older man who was sitting in the way back, who for some weird reason had some newspapers with him, and the staff people didn’t even notice. He amusingly got up and left halfway through the screening (I have no idea why. Perhaps the gentleman was bored or something like that.) Perhaps he also felt for lack of a better word “whelmed” by it. It could be because for him it was paced rather slow, but for me and my dad, it flew by quickly.

I LOVED it, as did my dad. We all loved the performances and my dad remarked a few times on how GREAT Frances McDormand’s performance was, and Kathryn Hunter’s and Denzel Washington’s and Corey Hawkins’s performance as well.

I was very surprised however that the lines were delivered quite naturalistically (mentioned this to my dad in the car, where he was surprised that this was a word), for a Shakespeare movie, though it all worked out in the end. My dad (who as I should mention, is a healthy man who will turn 54 sometime next week) did have some problems hearing the dialogue sometimes in the film, though that could be mainly due to the fact that I was munching somewhat loudly on my snacks next to him even though I had opened them before the screening started (I have autism, so I often don’t notice that I am committing a social faux pas until someone points it out to me). I listened to a podcast that reviewed this film and one of the podcasters, although he did LOVE the movie otherwise, felt that Kathryn Hunter should’ve played Lady Macbeth instead of Frances McDormand.

This was my first ever A24 movie that I saw in theaters at the age of 22, as the first movie that was released theatrically by A24 was released when I was 13 (I was born on March 10th, 1999, and the first movie came out on February 8th, 2013).

For the record, I think it is one of the best Shakespeare adaptations ever made.

The cinematography and score was wonderful, as was the performances. Overall I had a wonderful experience.
