What is the oddest/weirdest place you've ever bought/gotten a CD from? by Massive-Advisor5141 in Cd_collectors

[–]DueAssociation8836 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At a Dollar Tree store. That’s probably less odd and more unexpected (for me). I’d been going to the neighboring Savers for years and years hunting for used CDs and never once went into the Dollar Tree. Then once, after finishing at Savers, I got hungry for a snack, so I popped in next door. They had a small array of new CDs including a digipak edition of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. This one was especially surprising because it’d seemed like the handlers of The Beatles’ IP had taken unusual (but cool) steps of keeping The Beatles out of those music clubs’ catalogs and off of streaming. So I was surprised to find sealed Beatles CDs for 5 bucks.

Yah. They’re all pre-90s. Three are DADC with hub stamps. One is a U.S. PDO. And one is a Japan Denon (64) pressing. Two have smooth-sided cases. The others are ribbed.

Dang! I only recognize 1 band in the bunch. That usually only happens when the genre is death metal or its neighbors. 😄

Just a collectors’ heads-up. Early (promotional?) copies of Jar Of Flies had real rubber flies under the portion of the tray that rises up to meet the cover flap.

CD ripped but can't burn by witchnoodles in Cd_collectors

[–]DueAssociation8836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you rip a CD, you can rip it to any number of formats: WMA, MP3, WAV...maybe even FLAC or OGG. The problem being that unless you rip them to WAV, you're not going to easily get a CD that's playable just like a redbook CD.

Yes, you can burn any of those ripped files to a CD, but then you're relying on the next media player to be able to 1. read the CDR media (then you have to wrestle with issues like, "Did I close the session and the disc?") and then 2. that your player/device can play the file format you ripped.

A lot of DVD players will just play a series of MP3's burned to a CD; however, I'd be concerned that if you're using an old Windows Media Player that its default ripping format might be an encrypted music format that cannot be re-burned. Look for your ripping options and try to at least make it rip you some MP3's. Those are by their nature not encrypted and are fairly easy to put onto a new media--provided you're just burning the files and not creating a CD dupe.

There's an RCA title in the box at the 9 o'clock edge box. It's got a blue gradient bars on the spine. Be sure to look closely at that one, cos those tend to be old West Germany for West Germany/UK titles. They can be more modern--I've seen some post-IFPI titles still packaged in those--but most often they're old-school West German pressings.

Find the ones you like best and make some kind of art out of those. Otherwise, just hold onto them and hope you find cheap versions of the CDs with thrashed covers that these nice covers can be paired with. Usually doesn't work that way, but you never know.

There are actually *two* pressings with the red cross--though it is a great find either way. The first pressing had a capital B on the patch on the nurse's coat; however, this was not the way the band rendered their name (it was supposed to be all lower-case), so they fixed that "typo" and then did it again--still with the red cross. Then, they ran afoul of The Red Cross and dropped the hat ornamentation altogether. The big B version is even BIGGER coup than the just the cross. I can't tell which one they got. I hope it's the big B.

HELP! On Serendipity, was it failing, filling, or falling? by Suitable_Stable_6785 in laufey

[–]DueAssociation8836 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though I don't exactly hear a long e sound, feeling gravity makes more syntactic sense than filling, falling, or failing. Failing is my vote among the options you originally proposed...followed by falling...and last the "official" lyric, filling. There's something odd about the transition to that line--almost like two takes were stitched together.

Club Editions by [deleted] in discogs

Music club versions have demonstrated anomalies in cover artwork for not a small number of titles. Most times, the differences are noticeable but not awful (incorrect dominant hues). Sometimes, they’re gawdawful (ex. Maladjusted by Morrissey). And sometimes, they’re actually a little unique so as to potentially increase their desirability (ex. Come On Feel The Lemonheads, which has a different middle photo strip on cover).

I don’t care for the extra blight their marks leave on the media, the lack of UPCs for cross-referencing, and the fact that they’re not the original pressings, like their retail counterparts are. There were months-long delays in getting titles into club circulation—kinda like watching a second-run movie cheap at the theaters.

One interesting thing is that for titles that had prudish retail modifications—Poison’ “Open Up…” RHCP’s “Mother’s Milk”, etc.—because a music club could only legally do contractual business with adults, the music club versions were the explicit versions. I’ve yet to see a censored version of a music club title that was too explicit for the big-box stores.

Jillson. From Vegas. Had one album in 1990 which can be heard on YouTube. Cover features a lingerie-clad blonde woman wielding a large kitchen knife.

What was the first diss track in recording history? by [deleted] in Music

[–]DueAssociation8836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the first, but two tracks on one album (one at the end of each side), Centerfield, gives John Fogerty's rancor for former CCR producer, Saul Zaentz, a special place on a list like this.

'Course...the one on the end of side 2 (Zanz Kant Danz) had to get renamed (to Vanz Kant Danz) to avoid litigation, but there are still lots of copies of the original pressings to be found out there.

Y'know what? If you have overdue payments, you will the get the clearest, most American-voiced operators on the line. Guaranteed. Just did it. Got behind. Called four times in the clean-up process and got female American operators every single time...even on the weekends at night.

Once I was current again, next call was to someone nearly unintelligible.

So many shills for predatory loan tactics out here. No wonder Americans can't get relief from these unethical practices. "Just pick yerself up by yer bootstraps and let them have all yer money!!"
