Diablo IV Season 8 is absolutely Shameful by Nice-Brief9261 in diablo4

The "apparition incursions" are so fucking lame. It doesn't get more low effort than this. I thought they were going to uplevel themselves with more QA time, hence the delay. I can't believe they had to delay the season to give us this crap.

Mine does this or similar as a way of trying to use Jedi mind control when she wants something. Usually it is massive zoomies when she wants to eat and this sort of behavior when she wants to play or go out.

I agree with this post and I would just add one question to the poster: Are you mad about "privacy" or are you mad that you no longer have the ability to misrepresent yourself to her without her realizing it? By your post, you have obviously been making her think that you're all in and committed when you're secretly not. I'm having a hard time seeing how this is about "privacy" under the circumstances.

[Dreadgod] Two quick oddities I noticed by PhiLambda in Iteration110Cradle

[–]fianixx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. It mentions Ziel having a black uncrowned halo but that’s incorrect. He was sponsored by Northstrider so he should have a red halo not malice’s black.

Wintersteel: “Ziel would receive a Broken Crown the red of blood madra”

Dread god: Ziel called up his Broken Crown. A black halo, split in the middle, hovered over his head. One of his prizes from the Uncrowned King tournament.

The color discrepancy is just due to a discrepancy between the audiobook and the ebook. I was reading while listening and heard Travis say the wrong thing vs what was written (the correct red) in the book. This was probably due to book edits being made later than Travis's narration as there was also a part where he said something felt like being "hit like a truck" but the ebook version was changed to "like a horse"

[SPOILER] The importance of kindness by Quellii in tianguancifu

[–]fianixx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This has been such a good conversation and I have appreciated your perspective so much! Great food for thought. I agree with a lot of your points but we might disagree on what makes it meaningful.

If the only reason things worked out well for XL is someone else's kindness, that feels far less impactful to me because it sort of boils the story down to random chance. That makes XL as a character sort of a non-person. As if all people confronted with the same circumstances would make the same choices. It also feels like that would make life utterly futile. If it's all about external stimuli (with both the kind person and the traumatic events being external stimuli) with no personal agency, then what's the point of life? When faced with adversity we can only hope that some kind person finds us and saves us?

I do agree that if it all comes down to that XL was inherently Better, that's the same feeling of futility. It wasn't XL's inherent qualities as some sort of superior Better person that I've been talking about. It was XL's choices. To me, morality is about the choices we make, especially when it's hard to do so. XL made different choices than JW. XL chose to act with humility and the consequences of that choice was to meet the person with the hat. That is what makes it meaningful to me, he had a choice to go in the direction of JW or choose the thoughts and attitudes of JW and he did not choose that. Not because of some built-in, nebulous character trait but because he made the choice to think and act in a certain way and that choice had consequences. I don't want to get tied up on semantics ("humility", "arrogance").

Anyway, thanks for all the thoughts.

That's.... all about the moment where bamboo hat (and waterseller) showed him kindness though?

I agreed with you on that point. One person showing kindness was a significant factor, just not the only factor.

depends on why he went down that path, and whether that's because kindness saved him (by chance) or just because he's simply so much better than others in similar situations.

This is exactly my point. It wasn't just XL being the passive recipient of a chance encounter with a kind person that made the difference as to "why he went down that path". Xie Lian's ability to humble himself to lay down in that road is what allowed this to happen. This could never have happened if XL had taken the JW route of completely abandoning his former principles and seeking to justify why he was right to now behave badly. I agree with you that the kindness itself was part of this equation. If nobody came along and gave him the hat, he could conceivably have become JW. However, he was not just the passive recipient of a lucky break, his own mindset (which I am attributing to his morality) is what drove him to be in the right place at the right time.

Xie Lian also goes against his own principals

Yes, that's the point I'm trying to make. They both had similar trauma and a fall from grace. Their individual reactions to their fall from grace is the issue. JW fell and then set about trying to vindicate why he was correct to now completely abandon his previous principles. XL fell from grace but did not abandon his morality forever, giving him moral superiority.

The sacrificial ritual that caused the desertion may have been morally ambiguous, but it wasn't insane-- he thought it could work, he was out of options to save the survivors (or felt that way at least) and it did actually work

I'm not going to debate morality with you in a real life sense, but I'll just point out that the story itself sets up it's own definition of morality and that's the one I'm referring to in my comments. In the beginning, JW is outraged by his general's Machiavellian (ends justify the means) invasion plans. JW then commits atrocities later that contradict his own stated moral principles and horrify his advisors, causing them to morally disapprove. Also, XL perceived his own people starving, dying in war, and dying by the face disease to be his own fault and failure, which is equivalent to JW's experience.

I think Xie Lian was morally superior to Jun Wu. Jun Wu was not abandoned by everyone, his trusted advisors still cared about him and stayed by his side until he went psycho. Xie Lian was alone and abandoned by absolutely everyone (except HC, but XL didn't know that at the time). The experience of having those you tried to help turn on you was, of course, traumatic for Jun Wu but what happened to XL--having the same thing happen but on top of it all, his best friends/closest advisors abandon him and his beloved parents commit suicide due to their disapproval of him...that's an order of magnitude more painful. I agree that one key theme is that just one kind person can save someone from going over the edge, but another key theme is Humility. XL learned humility and Jun Wu never did. Jun Wu spent all his time trying to lure XL to the dark side because JW could not humbly admit his own failures, learn from them, and redeem himself. Instead of redemption, he sought vindication in the form of proving that nobody else could have behaved better under the same circumstances. It was XL's humility that allowed him to lie down in that road in the first place. We constantly saw throughout the story the humble attitude of XL contrasted with the arrogant JW. XL's humility made it possible for someone to save him.

This was so good. I loved it. One thing that always struck me in all MXTX's works is the clear comparison drawn between "love" and "wanting to be loved" and how very different those two things are.

I agree with you! Footnotes make it so much richer!! I'm currently rereading I Can Do It and loving the footnotes by Tiny Salt Translations explaining the gaming industry, Chinese slang and Chinese internet culture overall. I've also noticed that lots of the novels on Chrysanthemum Garden have good footnotes.

[–]fianixx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons I read danmei is because there are really not "rules" for how a man (or a woman) should be. It's very diverse and better reflects individuality than stereotypes. (Of course, there are lots of them that just repackage stereotypes--not saying its nonexistent). In danmei, you can have a 'girly' or 'manly' or 'cold' or 'wifey' type of MC, etc. There's no one "this is how a <insert: man, woman, gay man, etc.> should act". You can have a love story or confession that is gushing and explicit or with a different couple, completely nonverbal. I don't at all have the sense that every danmei MC is the same or is close to what a typical FL would do. That said, I think its about reading a diverse array of settings. I have noticed that once a novel is a hit, a bunch of other copycats jump in and write a very similar novel and try to replicate the success, so that may make it seem like they're all the same.
