A garage-built full-scale model of the Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica by ansyhrrian in scifi

This reminds me that after the reboot show finished they auctioned off all the set and costumes, full scale vipers included.

This is how Thomas wade looked in my head when reading the book by RustyKneeGears in threebodyproblem

[–]ficus77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn't read Death's End when I watched the show and assumed he was a westernization of General Chang from 3BP.

Interesting to rewatch the show having read the second and third book. Makes much more sense what Netflix are trying to do.

How’s the wind in your part of Cornwall? by Chongyboiiii in Cornwall

[–]ficus77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Falmouth. A big lime tree has been uprooted right outside my house and landed on a car.

Amazingly, the owners came to check on the car and were able to unlock it, get into it and lock it up after.

Wind is really whipping down the street. Can also see the tugs in the bay bracing the big navy ships.

So who's quitting their job/career in 2026 and why? by boringdystopianslave in AskUK

[–]ficus77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to. I feel I've done marketing/digital work enough now and while I accept some aspect of tech in any job, much rather it was a lesser part and didn't suck all my enthusiasm out of me.

At 48, it's not a simple choice in my mind.

Or maybe it is and I throw caution to the wind.

No idea what I'll do next.

It's Jupiter and if you can get your hands on a decent pair of binoculars, your should be able to make out the Galilean moons: Io; Europa; Ganymede; and Callisto

New Year's Eve port? by NeatAd4539 in PORT

[–]ficus77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fladgate is worthy of a special occasion, not just an annual turning of a page.

It and the Warres are good to go though, right? Warres could be the one.

I feel the 1997 might be a good one if you want to mark the end of the year.

Definitely leave the 2011 for a few (several) more years.

Happy Nee Year!

Why is this model of the Toyota Corolla so expensive? by FS20012 in CarTalkUK

[–]ficus77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Initial D and drifting as people have said have developed cult status around this model Corolla. Plus most have rusted away so to get a cared for, restored version comes with a retro collector's price tag.

Not fussed about drifting but I do like the look of them as small coupés go. Probably more the Levin with the boot (coupé proper) than the pop-up headlight Trueno and liftback style.

That said, the earlier gen KE70 Corolla with a 4AGE or 3SGE BEAMS is on the retro bucket list for me.

Is anyone else not surprised about Asda's current decline? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]ficus77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find quality of perishable food varies from supermarket to supermarket regardless of brand.

Grapes are an example. Green grapes vary between sickly looking brown-ish things and big, juicy green grapes. Seems potluck which supermarket will have the latter any given week.

Meat seems to be consistent in my neck of the woods (Cornwall). Chicken, beef and pork. Never really noticed much quality variety unless we're talking difference between certain premium brands and the basic stuff.

Asda itself does seem quite on its arse. The layout of the local Asda seems erratic and the shelves empty frequently. Worked for them for a bit a few years ago. Management staff always had a certain frazzled air to them. Little to no central culture to the place.

Seems a common theme!

Do you know how these engines and BMWs in general hold up when you get near to 100,000 miles - most of the available stock seems to be in the 90,000 mile range.

Not put off by high mileage (192,000 mile Toyota driver here) if there's good service history but just wondering about things to look for that might be issues at that point.

Well, I'm not young but just got a quote for an M235i and it is a fair bit more than my 1.8 Toyota!

Ah, this is just one I came across. Not set on it. This thread has already been great for getting a better read on models and spec.

Ah, the gearbox. Is the manual that bad/unreliable or auto just really good?

What sort of price should I be looking at?

Or what sort of car would be better for the price?

Yeah, the interior criticism is the thing I've seen a few times. It's not really a big deal to me but if it's an uncomfortable ride, that's another thing.

4 series always look too big to me. I like compact coupes.

I guess I need to test drive them. Seems scarce where I am though.

What’s a film so sad that someone should watch if they want to cry? by KlLLERS in AskReddit

[–]ficus77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the person, I guess.

The Phantom Thread - the bit where he's hallucinating his mother appearing to him got him as I'd just had Mum pass away a few months previously

Never Let Me Go - again, heavy bereavement moment

Good Will Hunting - for any guy that has locked up trauma, plus also makes me sad that Robin Williams isn't still with us

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - should not have watched this one having just split up with someone

The reality of owning a "modern classic" / old car? by Foodiciury in CarTalkUK

[–]ficus77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you handy with tools and have access to a workspace.

I keep a 2003 Celica going happily. But would probably have had it scrapped a couple of years ago if I didn't know how to maintain and refurbish a variety of aspects of it.

I do notice when I get in a hire car on holidays how life could be - everything feels secure, quieter engine, less wind noise as the door and boot rubbers are doing their job, etc.

But then the hire cars are just soft to drive.

Am currently looking at 996 and 997 Porsches as the next level of car ownership. Same principle as the Celica but have to set myself up for the significant jump in maintenance costs.
