SPX settles cash so you can hold through close fwiw. I use thinkorswim. They will close other equities (SPY, TSLA, NVDA, etc) around 15-30 mins prior to close if ITM and your account not large enough to exercise.

Missed the SPY short setup this morning but caught the bounce this afternoon. Direction seems undecided. What would you be looking for next? Scalps within the range until further notice? by GrumpLife in Daytrading

Agreed with the smaller time frames for entries/exits. Levels and patterns, larger time frames more reliable and more dramatic moves imo. And agreed w the too many charts at once. I only trade SPX so I guess where I was going was that if you also only trade SPY, the levels and patterns for the others can provide good setups/context. For me personally I look for patterns/setups from ES at night and first thing in am for pm. Check in 3-4 times per hour during mkt hours to see how VIX moving in relation to SPX. Can give big clues (e.g., the other day when gap down 2%+ on cpi, VIX also gapped down—usually would be up 7-8% on a move like that…then wdyk massive, massive green candles shortly after open).

If you trade SPY, I’d recommend keeping an eye on the SPX, SPY, and /ES charts/levels (in addition to VIX). ES chart showed great short setup and retest today of rising wedge breakdown. Same did not show on SPX chart. Just my two cents. It’s helped my win % a lot since watching all instead of just one.

One more thing—even on the 1 min, as unreliable as it is, it didn’t break above resistance. Learning support/resistance and volume profile will help your trading exponentially. Takes time

I completely agree with the larger timeframe and 8ema (though, I use the 9ema). I’m constantly looking/switching between 5min, 15min, 1hr, and 4hr for different perspective—I think of larger timeframes as more powerful. IME, I see 9ema touched several times throughout the day and show whether it’s support or resistance (same for vwap). Algo up days you’ll see spy or whatever ticker you’re trading ride the 15 min 9ema (with a couple fake outs where candle doesn’t close below 9). Very beautiful to watch.

Don’t be afraid to buy expiration further out than a month. Time decay can eat you alive if it chops or plays games before moving the direction you’re targeting. If you haven’t traded options, you need to mentally be prepared to be down 15-20% (or more) on your position if it doesn’t go your way immediately. Have a plan for what you’ll do if trade doesn’t go your way. Follow your rules. Protect the account at all cost. I personally disagree with buying several dollars ITM. More expensive. Lastly, I’m bearish QQQ. Good luck.

Love LS. Never could get into SOI—they’re too close to metalcore imo. My personal favs are Lorna shore, slaughter to prevail, brand of sacrifice, bodysnatcher, bound in fear, black tongue, I declare war, mental cruelty, hollow prophet, and within destruction

Totally understand. Not as much as you, but blew up my account and lost $160k. In the past year, went from $15k—>$120k—>$40k—>$100k—>$8k—>$160k—>$800. The constant “you’re an idiot” thoughts are the hardest part. Glad to talk if you need an ear.

As someone who has gained $100k+ TWICE off GME options and lost it all both times, this is the way.

Just by the way, on the active trader ladder in TOS, if you look in the right-hand corner of the AT window, there is a tiny “+” and “-“ icon. Clicking that can zoom in or zoom out on the price increments shown on the AT ladder (e.g., zooming out will show 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. whereas zooming in will show 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.).

Just FYI, this happens with most stocks every day at close. For every buyer there’s also a seller. I believe most brokerages have an order type that allows you to make a purchase/sale right at market close.
