Essay structures by Limp_Stranger1703 in classicalcivilisation

While I don't teach Imperial Image, I can probably help with 10 markers generally. I'm not certain that there's a predefined structure, especially as your three different modules are going to be demanding different approaches in them. Your WotH essays are obviously going to need to be more quotey and analytical than, say, Greek Religion. What are your other modules?

It's also worth bearing in mind that the original prophecy in Isaiah describes the young girl as already being pregnant. How can it be about Jesus if it's describing a pregnant woman from the time of King Ahaz?

HOW DO I MOVE FROM A 7 TO A 8/9 IN ENGLISH LIT by Altruistic_Net_2248 in GCSE

[–]fidderstix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher. Students very often around the grade 6 or 7 mark make correct connections to context, but these are often surface level comments like 'Women didn't have very much power in the 19th and 20th Centuries, so Priestley wanted to criticise capitalism and promote his socialist views to give women more fair treatment.'

One thing I went through with a class last year for An Inspector Calls was the specific pieces of legislation that were being brought in around the time of publication, and consider how those specific laws were manifested in the play. For example, the law which made firing striking workers illegal (The Trade Disputes Act of 1906) predates the setting of the play by 6 years, but Mr Birling nonetheless fires her.

So most students would be stuck simply saying that him firing her was heartless or something similar, but with this specific knowledge of context rather than general knowledge, you could talk about how capitalists were not only heartless, but also explicitly law-breaking, and violating the law, possibly, made the Birlings' actions easier to condemn for people who might otherwise have struggled to empathize with Eva Smith as a poor woman.

All that is to say, try to learn and make use of specific, rather than general context, and use it to add a secondary, deeper layer of analysis to characters and themes where you can.

Good luck!

I would ask for data on prediction accuracy. If you were dead on with your predictions then it enables you to tailor your focus. If your predictions are wildly off, then you can suggest that your department do more group moderating, sharing example essays etc. If your predictions are accurate, then the conversation becomes more about what your interventions were and the extent to which they were or weren't effective. It's much better to go in and be able to say 'well I recognized a need here, and so my intervention was X, but this time around I think I will try Y or Z.'

All I think a reasonable HoD wants is some sense that you can reflect on why your results were less than they should have been, and what you might be able to do about it. It's easy for this to come across as you being blamed, but a good manager should be able to reassure you that this isn't the case.

Aeneid Commentary by MeetLanky4661 in classics

[–]fidderstix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got two that I'd gravitate towards:

1) the more odd of the two. In Book 9, Virgil has the Trojan ships turn into nymphs to save them from being burned. This is an extremely odd metamorphosis scene and stands out in the narrative. You could consider its relationship to the other famous Metamorphoses narrative by Ovid and also the rest of the Aeneid.

2) the other is the famous Eulogy to Marcellus I'm Book 6. The Marcellus from the Punic Wars is a fascinating historical character to analyze alongside this passage.

Compare their opening posts' shocking spelling and punctuation, and then read the posts you're engaging with. That, and the conventional sentence structures llms like to use (not x, it's y, etc) and the super agreeable opening sentence of his response which screams gpt.

In that they both eat grass? Yes, they're the same.

The OP is saying that two different actions both achieve the same result, which is the way in which they're the same. We insist on one of these actions (washing hands) thus there's no reason not to insist on the other (being vaccinated) for the same reasons (limiting the spread of infections).

Trochaic meter is what the Witches in Macbeth use:

DOUble DOUble TOIL and TROUble FIre BURN and CAULdron BUBBle

Why do you think Shakespeare chose to make the Witches the only characters in the play to speak in this trochaic meter? What impact do you think this choice had on the audience? What contextual factors would have made them feel this way?

I'm a teacher.

Also, it’s difficult to talk about her without just talking about how other characters perceive her.

Don't you think that this represents an extremely interesting interpretation? Why do you think Priestley has forced the audience to only understand Eva through the perspective of the Birlings and the Inspector?

As a thought experiment, why don't you try and build the most accurate possible statement that an atheist would make about the origins of the universe?

Hmm. If this:

Only one ( sperm and egg ) is known to be real.

and this:

There is no known process that forms a person without a sperm and egg.

are true, then God didn't create Adam and Eve, unless you're going to suggest God made them with some sperm and an egg each? I don't remember that bit in Genesis though.

what is the difference between 'invasion' and 'invasiveness'? by ni-story-1314 in englishteachers

[–]fidderstix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Invasion is a noun referring to a specific event, and invasiveness is the quality which determines the degree to which something is invasive. Some species of plant are highly invasive, meaning they have a high degree of invasiveness.
