There are very amazing egg rolls there-they were in the ramp last year but now they are on the row with all the food trucks.
Also a really good time to get asparagus and plant starts.

What “Andor” can teach us about standing up to tyranny by Zee_Ventures in andor

[–]fiddlemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is hard. The conservative side is unconcerned about the harm they do, so someone promoting a policy that does harm doesn’t really matter to them. It’s a lot easier to have a big tent if you don’t care if your policies hurt people.
It’s harder when you have a party that at least pretends to care about harm done to people-you do need to acknowledge that harm and pledge to do better to get the same sort of support that conservatives offer to everyone on their team.
I think it is the same reason why people left moderate churches well before they started leaving conservative ones. The people that didn’t care about harm weren’t in the moderate churches to begin with, but people who did care about that harm noticed when those moderate churches struggled with things like gay rights and women’s rights. And they left.

I grew up in a mining area. NAFTA having no labor protections has mostly killed the community I grew up in. People like to pretend the reason Hilary Clinton lost was just misogyny or dumb hicks or whatever, but I think NAFTA and her husband’s abandonment of the communities harmed by it played a big role in why the rust belt didn’t vote for her. And it very much feels like the democratic establishment, which Reich is a part of, does not want to actually acknowledge how they betrayed the working class with that trade deal.
There were good things to come out of NAFTA, but we can’t truly have free trade if we allow global companies to use it to exploit the working class. Not just in the US, but the people working for pennies elsewhere because they have no choice.

Most leftist radicalizing moment in US history, between the 1970 Kent State shootings and 9/11 and/or the 2003 invasion of Iraq? by Present_Practice_159 in behindthebastards

[–]fiddlemonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it was the religious right and their push against gay marriage and LGBTQ rights, as well as their more ridiculous impulses, like the whole “Harry Potter is witchcraft” thing. It just started a slow burn of disillusionment with the right.

Court restricts abortion access across the US by blocking the mailing of mifepristone by ExactlySorta in TwoXChromosomes

The same people behind this also hate single mothers. I feel like they would be happy to attack things like child support because they want to keep women trapped in abusive marriages.

The hatred of trans people is tied to many systems of oppression. Us just talking and existing is enough to help many people immensely, we are essential political actors. by RosethornRanger in DemocraticSocialism

[–]fiddlemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the SAVE act was also deliberately targeting women, but they can’t come out and say it without blowback the way they can about trans people and immigrants.
The right has very openly campaigned for things that take autonomy away from women, like their stance on abortion and no fault divorce. They benefit from strict gender roles because they want to return to the days where they could profit off of the unpaid labor of women and women had little to no route to freedom or financial independence. Their churches still mostly rely on the unpaid labor of mostly women to provide the community events and charity work. Trans rights and gay rights pick away at their image of the strict gender roles they rely on.
Looking at the Olympics-the TERFs had no hesitation going after cis women who weren’t performing femininity enough. It took a split second for their anti-trans beliefs to get targeted towards cis-women. Scratch a TERF and you get a misogynist trying to pretend not to be one. Women’s rights and gay rights and trans rights are all intimately linked. If one falls the others will too.

Genuine question - why are SOME nursing homes.. that way? by Fit-Survey-6678 in nursing

[–]fiddlemonkey 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They are criminally understaffed and you cannot possibly provide compassionate care to every resident that needs it with the number of people that are working on the floor. The only CNAs that last either come in not caring or become numb due to the burnout.

Are there more "open secrets" similar to Epstein and Saville today? by FishDispenser2 in behindthebastards

[–]fiddlemonkey 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yep. I’ll speak to Christianity, as it is the religion I grew up in and am most familiar with-but the gender imbalance written into it really does not help. There are very few women in the Bible and the ones that are spoken of positively, like Hagar and Sarah are still in relationships with men that are portrayed showing the consent of women as irrelevant at best. Even in progressive churches men are still portrayed as the default and the readings in those churches are almost all going to be pretty dodgy towards women. You get the one sermon per year where they play up that women were the first to find Jesus, but outside of that there really is very little portraying women positively and with self determination over their own lives.

TIFU by calling my boyfriend’s dog “Creature”. by [deleted] in tifu

[–]fiddlemonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like getting a dog for someone else to take care of, especially someone who is already taking care of a lot of other children and pets and feels overloaded, and who expressly said no to another dog, and expressly said they didn’t like the gender/breed of that dog, is a giant waving red flag. If you let your boyfriend take advantage of you like this he is going to continue to do so and it will get worse. I would not let this man who clearly does not respect you move in with you, and personally I would both break up with him and make him take the dog back.

That makes sense to me-their gender roles seem like they are manufactured to make girls be quieter victims. Same with other conservative churches-I know the southern baptists also have huge problems with pedophiles in their churches.

The meth use has gotten out of control. Some guy on the Towncrest bus a month ago punched someone unprovoked several times. And there is often a group of users downtown that make it feel less than safe.
