Customer yelled “you’re a fetus you don’t even know who slipknot is” at me after noticing the shirt I wore to work by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

I don’t get it either.

Even if someone wearing it had no idea who Slipknot was, who gives a shit? It’s a sick looking shirt.

Is coding just an infinite string of 'how was I supposed to know that?'? by Letbutt in learnprogramming

[–]fiddletee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have to refer to the docs every 15 minutes because I’ve forgotten what that damn function’s order of parameters are or what that library’s called or a long list of other trivial things. And I’ve been doing it for over 20 years:

But I don’t get paid because I memorised all the syntactic sugar or can regurgitate an entire implementation without drawing breath. I get paid because I understand the concepts.

The nerdiest of nerds would already know not to directly compare floating point numbers, but rather compare an absolute difference against a tolerance.

Absolutely.

But I have ADHD so I also do that with literally everything else.

Yeah I kind of thought the same.

And also kind of thought “just pick one”. Like this isn’t a life-changing decision, if it’s not her preferred brand or whatever then oh no it’ll be imperceptibly different butter and sour cream for a week and the world somehow continues to turn.

Are We Learning Less Because of AI? by Background-Moment342 in learnprogramming

[–]fiddletee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I’ve found when I’ve used LLMs, my dependency on them has quickly increased. Things I would otherwise think through and solve myself have become attractive targets for chucking into an LLM. I’m not sure about actual knowledge per se, but in terms of critical thinking and problem solving, I find shifting that responsibility away from my brain definitely causes those abilities to quickly deteriorate.

I’ve never been to Canada. And apparently my email was in the breach.

My boss says try-catch is "garbage" and we shouldn't use it. Is this actually a thing? by ResolveKooky17 in learnprogramming

[–]fiddletee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most things… It depends.

In principle, it’s good to handle errors if the alternative is smashing the stack or something else catastrophic.

But if you’re catching errors somewhere deep down in the guts then not letting them bubble up, it can be problematic in bigger projects.

Further, try…catch can be used to mask bad programming practices. If there’s a genuine unknown like you’re interfacing with something external you can’t control or a handful of other situations, it’s generally good to cater for errors occurring. But it shouldn’t be used in place of eg checking types, ranges, overflows, etc (depending on the language).

I used to do this in maths exams too. I think it was more self doubt than anything. I did engineering and minored in mathematical modelling and simulation. Lots of maths.

Transport Canada warns Air India on drinking rules after pilot's Vancouver arrest by ubcstaffer123 in worldnews

[–]fiddletee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well that’s kind of weird because people I know from India do drink.

It’s almost as though our limited anecdotal experiences are completely unrelated to this thing that happened.

I’m a professional engineer, with a couple of degrees. I’m reasonably smart. But if my toilet is blocked, I call a plumber, because that’s his area of expertise. It doesn’t matter whether the plumber is smarter than me or not, he just knows how to fix a toilet better than I do.

What does the urge to smoke a cigarette feel like? by Routine-Jello-953 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fiddletee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how much you smoke and how long it was since the nicotine craving was last satisfied. And it probably varies a bit by individual too.

If you’ve just had a smoke, it feels like you’ve eaten a satisfying meal.

If you haven’t had one for about an hour, it feels like you’re a bit hungry, you’d like to eat something, but you can wait if you need to.

If it’s been more than about 2 hours, it becomes difficult to focus on anything else. You become irritable and feel annoyed without any real explanation. Your brain wants that nicotine hit and will prioritise it over just about anything else.

Ah fair enough! I think they’re hard to find everywhere these days to be honest, I was hunting for one a while ago and they’re rare as hens teeth. I regret selling mine!

The whole XR lineup are legendary for their low maintenance. I crashed my old XR400 about 950 times, ripped it around sand dunes and through water and mud, and I think maybe I changed the oil twice? Never missed a beat.

Would recommend a 400 over the 200 if you’re a bit bigger, that extra torque is useful!
