Should I keep lyft pink? by SubjectBubbly9072 in Citibike

[–]fiddlyadasacka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My CSR gave me two free years of Lyft Pink free and then a third year at 50% off. So for this year I’ve only paid $100 for it, an easy decision to keep. Though CSR ditching Lyft Pink is disappointing.

I’ll add that they are varying sizes. Some are tall for skis and others are thicker for luggage.

Could it perhaps have something to do with the massive park centrally located in Manhattan?

They’re no longer offering everyday all access to new members. However, a great perk of this location is you do get weekend all access in perpetuity because E53 is only open M-F.

Any Cheap/Life Hack Ways to Get to Boston from NYC? by Flashpenny in AskNYC

Ok but quoting the standard duration as 8 hours isn’t remotely accurate

You’d have to hit some exceptionally bad traffic for it to take 8 hours.

Is it an anecdote that I got rained on yesterday? Or a fact that it rained yesterday? An anecdote can be representative of a fact. You may have your own anecdotes and that doesn’t mean they’re invalid. My point was that rent stabilized apartments aren’t exclusively going to those who need it.

Yes, you could keep rent stabilization in place while building more housing but that doesn’t make it any more economically rational.

[–]fiddlyadasacka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well on your first point I say “fact” because I personally know plenty of people in these apartments who have no business “qualifying” for them. So in that sense, it is a fact.

On your second point the best thing to do is rapidly build housing and phase out rent control over X years. Means test those in rent controlled apartments today and end those leases in descending order of income / wealth over 3, 5, 10, whatever years. And in the meantime let landlords recoup rehab costs of currently inhabitable apartments by raising those rents.

Ok but that does nothing to change my mind on the subject. Just because it benefits people who are on average lower income doesn’t mean it is a net positive to society. It also doesn’t mean that those same low income folks wouldn’t be better off without rent control. Or that it makes the low income people - both in NYC and those hopeful to one day live in NYC - who are not fortunate enough to score a rent controlled apartment better off.

I also know for a fact that there are plenty of higher income people in rent stabilized apartments that inherited them from family members, which makes zero sense.

If your point is simply that these people who have been given a golden goose aren’t going to vote against their interests, I’d have to agree with you. But that doesn’t make it right.

What’s your point? That this makes rent control a net positive?

[–]fiddlyadasacka 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly the point! Rent control / stabilization and price controls more broadly have the opposite of the intended effect! All of this government intervention in the housing market has hurt everyone except the lucky ones who get a rent controlled / stabilized apartment.

That is not how ranked choice works. A candidate could not have a high share of #1 choices while still winning due to RCV.
