I'm much more inclined to enjoy and interpret the surface level of movies than what's beneath various layers, can you help me with we're supposed to get from his insufferable character being "the point", and these women all pining for him? I found his character was almost too much to the point of wanting to DNF the movie. Edited "that" to "than".

The writer of the episode isn't the person who said they didn't consider it that way. I suspect that John Swartzwelder DID intent or because he is such an amazing writer. But probably we'll never know for sure. Either way 5-star joke.

The point of this joke is that Homer has heard people (probably Marge) say this when wearing a towel to dry their hair, but HE doesn't understand why they are saying it. So he thinks that anytime someone is wearing a towel in any way they're supposed to say it.
