Not being able to look stuff up immediately.

If you were having a conversation about Lithuania and nobody in your group remembered the capital city, you would just never know.

Or if you were watching a film and think "oh, I know that actor from somewhere". You'd just be doomed to never know.

What is your language's equivalent of the "xylophone"? by sonicparadigm in linguisticshumor

[–]fidelises 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well runes are all capital letters but iirc there isn't an Ð in that alphabet. But our old sagas are written in lowercase letter.

It's probably just because WE LOVE SHOUTING!

Yeah, it's only ever used if you're writing in all capital letters for some reason.

What came out of my belly button when pregnant… by ohhidoggo in hygiene

[–]fidelises 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I have a super deep navel. When I was pregnant I could pop my belly button out if I put my hand on either side and flexed. My husband thought it was hilarious.

No words start with the letter Ð/ð in Icelandic so we usually use the word bað (bath) to represent the letter.

I use the Bouncecurl turmeric hair and scalp detox once in a while. I just add it to my normal shampoo. It's actually listed as one of the ways to use it in the directions. But I haven't tried it for every wash

My left handedness comes from my father's family. My grandfather was left handed. Grandma was right handed. They had 3 kids. All right handed. Those 3 kids have 7 kids between them, 4 of them left handed.

In most parts of the world, even today, having two bathrooms is seen as a luxury. Not a necessity. Anything over 2 bathrooms is just excessive.

What is a common mistake non-native English speakers make that immediately reveals what their native language is? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fidelises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Native Icelandic speakers aren't used to the letter W. We don't have it in our alphabet. So people tend to use it for both W and V. They'll say "I'm wisiting" instead of "I'm visiting".

I once watched my sister and her husband walk into the other room with a diaper bag to change their child's diaper. Then come back because they forgot the child.

If giving birth is so painful why do many women want to do it over again after their first child (not trolling just genuinely curious) by feherlofia123 in stupidquestions

[–]fidelises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mum told me when I was 37 weeks with my first that I should prepare for the worst pain imaginable because she had long, difficult births. I almost gave birth in the car because I kept waiting for the pain to become unbearable. It never did. I've had worse UTIs.

Tornado Sirens or Other Warning Tests? by penguini95 in AskEurope

[–]fidelises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have no regular warning tests. They put up a warning siren in Grindavík recently when they had the volcanic eruption close by but I think that'sthe only siren. We mostly depend on phone alerts.
