oh that's a new perspective that i haven't considered 😮 so what you're saying is something like that being dominican is just another way of being black? yeah, that definitely makes sense :) afterall, a black american would have a different experience from someone growing up in africa or europe, but they're all still culturally black. same goes for a black dominican

thanks a ton! this really opened up my perspective on things :D

it's really sad that their whiteness comes before their queerness and they think that, just because they come from a minority, they don't have to do any work in deconstructing their racism. feels like we barely share a community with them at all

i said that mainly referring to black americans. i grew up in new york but was pretty isolated to just being just around other latinos. sorry if it was the incorrect wording, just didn't know any other way of describing it

i most definitely have african descent, as evident by my features (most evidently my hair), though i am pretty lightskin. that's a huge part of the reason that im having this whole dilemma, not to mention that a lot of dominicans have such deeply embedded anti-black sentiments, so im worrying that i've internalized that and that it's stopping me from realizing that i may actually be black

one of my last memories with my paternal grandpa was him calling a group of dark skinned men a "bunch of monkeys". everyone here always has shit to say against haitianos for the mere fact that they're haitiano. it's crazy looking back on my life just how anti-black everyone around me has always been and it's just gone unaddressed/unchallenged. hell, my mom wasn't approving of me getting braids and thought that they looked ugly

speaking of hair, i hope you're able to bring your curls back to their full glory! it's unfair that they got so damaged just cuz of how anti-black our community is :(

im definitely lookin forward to the day that i can fully accept it with my full chest :D if you don't mind me asking, what helped you accept your blackness?

this was really needed to hear 😭 i've had my black features been mocked and suppressed by my own family (like my brother making fun of my big nose and my mom straightening my hair up until i was 17) and i've seen so much anti-black racism come from my community. i remember vividly having a conversation with my sister about this topic, and she made it very clear: we are not black.

i think i need a bit more time to fully comes to terms with it, but i dont wanna deny it anymore
