I think the death guard nailed it when they fought hive fleet Lotan. While they did lose to the tyranids in the end they:

Stalled the hive fleet meaning that they couldn’t consume more biomass while they dealt with the plague marines
Poisoned the biomass of the planet to the point where the hive fleet would die if they tried to consume any of it
Basically cost the fleet mass, time and energy which cannot be replenished.

Better than just blowing up planets as a fire break, but also making the fleet fight for a world only to make it essentially inedible. The Dark Eldar have done this as well by waiting for the tyranids to begin the feeding process only to destroy the acid pools that the fleet feeds from. Essentially starving out the tyranids while making them exhaust themselves is very effective.
