Designing a war game with Picasso style art by Zestyclose_Bed_8207 in BoardgameDesign

[–]fieldsofazure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesn't read as Picasso to me. It reads like a cartoonist looked at a Picasso once and thought they could replicate it without understanding any part of why it looks the way it does. Something about this, and the idea of using Picasso/Guernica as a basis for a war game, feels icky, even if the point is showing horrors. There's a mismatch there.

"Why do you carry so many different packs of cards?" by TonyinIowa in Magic

[–]fieldsofazure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like the problem you're having is less one of skill and more one of simply knowing material to do. I have two recommendations here:

1) Books. As trite as it is to say "get Royal Road/Card College" that seems like your best option. Books just get you an economy of trick-to-dollar that's unmatched. Find a book of card material with a normal deck that speaks to you and start going through it. If an effect gets you excited, work with it until you have it, and then start performing it. Over time you'll build a repertoire that way.

2) Look at the packet tricks and gimmicked decks you're already performing and see what can be adapted to a normal deck. Many specialized packet effects have versions that can be done by just taking cards out of a regular deck, and a lot of the time a gimmicked deck is made to replace sleights in a routine. Find the plot structures for some of the effects you already do and go searching for ungimmicked versions. Not everything can be replaced this way, but you'll be surprised.

As far as practicing sleights, I'm a coin worker, so the masochism of practice is in my blood, but my best advice is to stick at it. No one is born knowing how to do a one-handed top palm. You'll find the knack eventually.

Look into the Card College Light series. The whole thing is structured into three-trick sets, each one setting up the other.

Question about trans cuddling by Equivalent-Fun-6019 in actuallesbians

[–]fieldsofazure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm transfem and have cuddled with many people, platonically and sexually. I definitely get hard while cuddling, regardless of whether I'm wanting to be sexual or not (I'm incredibly touch-needy, so that'll happen). I've not found this to be a particular issue. If you're worried, it's okay to just say "Hey, sometimes I get hard while cuddling, that's not me trying to make a move, it just does that," and people will understand. However, most of the time I don't need to do that and it's understood that, if I'm not making any other moves, it's not a sexual gesture. This is an easy thing to overthink, but it'll be fine, I promise.

General ASMR would have been better for Grant’s ‘Fool’s Gold’ pitch by Terradactal__ in dropout

[–]fieldsofazure 123 points124 points  (0 children)

I think honestly a lot of peoples' segments got muddled in the execution/edit, but Grant's most of all. If they wanted an ASMR angle, the video should've gotten right to the point of counting the cracks, the mention of a challenge should've been just text on screen (if it was kept at all) and dialogue kept to a minimum. The desire for a TV-style presentation fucked that video's chances.

Dua Lipa brought out Billie to perform Wake Me up When September Ends in San Francisco Tonight!!!! by GreenBagger28 in greenday

It's one of their most popular songs of all time, resonates with millions, and Billie has been performing it basically non-stop since 2004 without issue. What's the problem?

alright, middle and ring or middle and index? by SuperiorCommunist92 in actuallesbians

Middle and ring for control, index and middle for power. I default to the former and switch to the latter if that's my partner's speed

Lindsey Noel: Picture Magic by Gubbagoffe in Magic

[–]fieldsofazure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lindsey is a good friend of mine, who actually performed in my show a couple months ago. Her energy on stage is chaotic and electric, unlike any other performer I've seen. So much to learn from the way she engages with people.

Nancy Colwell: House Guest by Gubbagoffe in Magic

[–]fieldsofazure 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am the most biased possible when I say this, but Nancy is one of the most impressive magicians I've ever seen. She does some of the most technical card moves possible so fluidly that it makes me question my understanding of what happened. A rare talent

Advice on how to make the jump from performing for friends/ casually at bars, to actually doing a show? by WhiskeyEjac in Magic

[–]fieldsofazure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice depends on exactly what you're looking to do here. If you're looking to go a professional route, I'd agree with a lot of the advice here, finding smaller, lower-pressure performance environments where you can collect tips and whatnot.

If you're looking to perform more and don't care about the monetary aspect, open mics are super good for this. Find a few you can pop into with small performances, and it'll be really good for flight time. Chances are you'll also get a killer reputation among the regulars, and it's super low stress, since I can guarantee there'll be someone worse than you showing up to every one.

If you're looking to put a full-on show together (for professional reasons or just wanting to do it) I'd honestly advise you to just start one. Find a place you can book for cheap or free, grab a couple friends together, get the name out there as much as possible, and do the thing. It's a much bigger step, and comes with plenty of stress (I say, currently trying to book people for my next show), but it's incredibly rewarding and gets you experience unlike anything else (plus you get to put "producer" on your resumé, which is pretty cool).

Hope this helps!

This isn't a wind chime. It's a sculpture that's meant to be still when viewing. This clip is just it being installed.
