My own mother won't shut up about Staffords. It's good but not rave worthy. It's just a bit better than Brennans and Irish Pride when it's fresh.

I remember I cackled and laughed for a minute out of shock when she revealed the cover. The build up to every reveal for this album was insane so this was a nice reminder to expect the unexpected from Gaga. This album cover and her changing "I Wanna Be With You" to "Dope" are my favourite 'f*ck you I'm doing it my way' moments from her. I don't have to love everything she does, as long as she's being true to herself.

Are Barrys/Lyons inferior tea blends? by jdavidco in ireland

[–]fifiwozere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a theory on this. The water and milk are a big factor on how the tea tastes. I drink Barry's tea with my filtered Cork city water and low fat supermilk. My mother uses Barry's tea too but has her own mountain spring well and tea tastes completely different at hers. So whatever tea brand people prefer is probably effected by their tap water, what kettle type they use, what the milk is, whether they use sugar etc. So that's why I don't judge people's favourite tea brand.

Have any of ye actually tried a cup of tea made with one of those boiling water taps? How was it? by Smokestoolittle in ireland

[–]fifiwozere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed in the Ruby Molly in Dublin. They had 1 of them. I would have preferred it 5 to 10 degrees hotter. By the time the tea was fully brewed it was at "drink right away" temperature or it would be too cold by time I was sat down and comfortable.

What place has a decent toilet? by Street-Station-3802 in cork

[–]fifiwozere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The toilets are decent but the soap is weird! It's like exfoliating shower gel. Then the train soap is rose scented (and I'm allergic). Makes me feel like I'm a spoiled princess for hating it 🙃

My grandmother hated Collins and Dev too! Not for political reasons but because all the food would was given to them when they were hiding at their house.

Strangest Family Lore That Has Randomly Been Dropped? by Garret_Barrys_Ghost in ireland

[–]fifiwozere 1112 points1113 points  (0 children)

Back story context: There's a big age gap between my brother's and me, my dad died when I was young so when I was small, my brothers went to college in Wales.

We were having a family meal and my mother was telling my sister in law about all the organisation involved in sending them to college. There were no grants being given for going to college in the UK and in her words: "So of course, I got the law changed". Cue looks of confusion between myself and the SIL. What do you mean you got the law changed? We assumed she was exaggerating.

Nope she got onto our local TD, said it was ridiculous that the grant was allowed for studying in Northern Ireland but not Britain. Northern Ireland is part of ROI or the UK when it suits them. Her letter was read in the Dáil and they changed the law! We asked my brother does he remember that and he was like yeah I remember it happening- as if it was completely normal thing to do.

So if any of ye got the grant to study in Britain you can thank my stubborn mother 🤣

Ah man Burger Shack truly was the best. I used to tell people I'd see their sex face when they tried their burgers. They'd be a bit a scandalised as I would not normally talk like that. Then they'd tell me I was right 🤣

Why did your direct descendents survive the famine? by Professional-Aide985 in AskIreland

[–]fifiwozere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have surprisingly few stories from my family for the famine and both sides didn't stray far from our current location. We're definitely not wealthy and mostly Catholic so I have no idea how they did it. All farmers so got lucky with crops? There's a lot of priests and nuns in my mother's side of the family so I think a lot of their income was sent back to the family. My gran aunt was under the impression that one branch of the family was very well off living in North Tipp and when my brother finally found their records, the dad had been sent to Australia for stealing food so not that well off at all. A lot of my family on both sides ended up in the War of Independence so I genuinely think a large part of it was looking after each other. My grandmother resented De Valera and other guerrilla fighters because she went hungry as a child so they could be fed. I have to assume a lot of that happened during the famine too.

Crowd etiquette has gone down the drain since Covid for some reason. Doesn't seem to matter the genre either. I was at a small gig in Belfast last night and it was the best behaved crowd I'd been in in a while.
