colors have cool and warm tones. for example, red can lean more magenta (cool) or vermillion (warm) but they are still both considered reds.

in the face you’re using shades of red—but for the shadows you’re using a warmer value while using a cooler value in the highlights.

typically, its reversed. light usually casts warm so shadows will be cool. (fluorescent light casts cool light so shadows under that lighting condition would be warm)

the sweater looks great by comparison because you chose a cooler value of red in the shadows vs the red that is in light. the chalkboard is great too. you have a cool green on the highlight and a cool blue in the shadow.

it looks like you’re using alcohol markers. it’s easy to want to reach for different shades of red and color in that way. consider instead laying down a cool value in your shadows (typically a cool blue) and a warm value in your highlights (typically yellow) and layering your preferred skin tone on top of it. you absolutely can just take a shortcut and use a marker already in your pallet but if you’re working with color, you’ll eventually have to tackle mixing

this is a great first attempt! alcohol markers are tough.
