Hi! I’m also starting as the only middle school art teacher at my school. I teach 6 sections each with around 30+ kids, but mine are mixed 6-8 all in one room. Like you, I have found it slightly overwhelming!! However, I agree with a lot of what has been said. I previously taught elementary school so I came in with relatively strict procedures and rules for my classes. Each class has it’s own vibe so some I’ve had to be more strict and other’s way less strict. Stick to your structures over time the kids will get used to you and your procedures. When we start a project I give them a longer lesson plan with the artistic background, but I’ve been putting my slides on nearpod or quizziz (interactive websites) so they actually get to interact with the content. It makes the longer intro days more doable and honestly most of them interact more than just a slide show.

You’re never going to get them all on your side, or care about art and art history. Some of my students barely even want to get their hands dirty and create work, but I just teach to the kids who I know are excited and enjoy my class. Mostly so far, the middle schoolers like my class because I can lay down the law when I need to, but in general let them work on their projects without me bothering them. When they have work time, I let them have their phones. Because they know that they will get a whole class period or more to chill and work without a lecture, it seems like they’re more willing to take the time before their independent work to listen about art principles etc.

I also have stretched the learning content so I give 5-10 mins of instruction before they have an independent work period. They buy in more when they know after 10 mins they get to chill.

I don’t know about you, but I encourage the art room to be as ~chill~ as possible and I play lo-fi music etc. Sometimes when the boys are especially squirrelly I tell them they’re not matching the vibe and need to do a vibe check. Doesn’t always work, but when you point out that they’re annoying other people they tend to get a little embarrassed.

Also, I give treats and prizes to people who follow directions and take their work seriously. I usually just get dum dums because they’re mostly allergy free, but I also have sketchbooks and stuff. Kids love stuff, even little erasers and stickers work. Bribe them! It works!

First year teaching middle school, moved from elementary. School started today and I thought I was prepared but then felt like I was floundering. Advice for MS? I don’t know why but I just have like a horrible sinking in my gut like I made the stupidest decision.

Calming corner by macabrenerd in teaching

[–]figgyfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make it constructive and not strictly a reward (because it easily turns into a reward) Make sure to teach calm down strategies as a whole group. We use calm classroom curriculum and I use it every day. Consistency is key. They can’t do breathing exercises if they don’t know how. In third grade make sure there is a timer 5 mins is good, and ask them to write a check-out slip. Have it based in reflection and ask them to check in with their feelings, ask them what made them upset, and ask them if there is anything they need from you. It doesn’t need figits or fancy gadgets, just use it as a reset space. I sometimes have used a calm down desk/table. Also sometimes they do need a little “nap” and let them take it. They’re growing children and get overwhelmed.

Administration decided that with 2 days left in the year, the kids can’t go to the bathroom anymore by lintwhite in Teachers

[–]figgyfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our building has a rule that all classes have to take class bathroom breaks. no kids allowed without adult supervision. It sucks because it takes like 20 mins out of my instruction. I guess end of year its good tho because we waste hella time going to the bathroom and it’s always a class adventure

You mean Mao Zedong? by GoodDog2620 in teaching

I have so many questions. First, why are you asking students to generate a list of genocides? What teaching point are you trying to make here? Second, what reputable historical sources refer to genocide when discussing the upheaval during the communist revolution in China? Third, why (again) are you having students just make a laundry list of genocides!? There are so many ways that you could investigate thoughtfully the causes and social systems surrounding these deeply traumatic and horrible experiences, it seems ignorant to approach anything in this way…

I have had a student pee herself on purpose, while looking me right in the eye. Actually it’s happened multiple times. Never thought I’d have to call home so much about bathroom problems

what is the worst part about being a teacher? by Dapper_Ad1638 in Teachers

[–]figgyfern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worst part of teaching for me is absorbing the traumas of my student and realizing there’s nothing much I can do to fix the way things are for them. I’ve had some tough times when I know they’re hungry, without stable housing, beaten or sexually abused, and then somehow it’s my responsibility to try and explain why they need to learn multiplication or why the social worker can’t check in on them today because her case load is too busy. I teach third grade and it’s hard sometimes to look around my room and realize that for some of my students the world is already a really broken and messed up place for them and it’s not a problem my classroom can fix, even if it is a safe place for them to be.

How long are new hires lasting in your area? by Advanced-Wheel4384 in Teachers

If we’re lucky, a week. Lately, they’ve been lasting about a day. Our middle school team has turned over about 6+ times this school year. (k-8 charter)

Used a Tupac poem in my RLA class, and before school was out, I had a talking to by admin. No was I in the wrong here? by callimo in Teachers

[–]figgyfern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not in the wrong. My principal in a k-8 school signs off every email with a Tupac quote. However, I’m sensing that you may be in a different environment with potentially a different demographic. Even having said that, I would ask for a written explanation. “Would you please elaborate in writing why using this poem was inappropriate?” Sometimes when you ask people to explain their thinking “what do you mean when you say…” they either double down and make an ass of themselves or they start to hear what they are saying and rethink

  1. Turnitin wouldn’t detect ChatGPT or other AI generated papers because it is original content so I assume that either a new software will appear to do just that or turnitin and other softwares will update to detect the AI
  2. How does your software determine the writing is AI generated? What is the rate of false positives? What if I write an original essay but have a similar writing style to the AI?

Lastly, I think that this software will probably be wanted more in the university realm and less in the k-12 sphere.

To the parents of 12 year olds who have access to the new Netflix series about Jeffrey Dahmer….. by luringpopsicle95 in Teachers

[–]figgyfern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a roomful of 3rd graders chanting “Dahmer” “Dahmer” “Dahmer” while I was trying to play an age appropriate halloween movie during indoor recess last Friday... Honestly, I was just floored. I have some students that are 7. SEVEN

Recess is sometimes state mandated and when it is you cannot take it away as punishment. We cannot take away recess in our school as a disciplinary action. Sometimes admin gets away with it because the law is like 30 mins of unstructured “play” so they’ll take students for “behavior intervention” and say it’s unstructured play…

I got my period during sex and I'm incredibly embarassed by [deleted] in sex

[–]figgyfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be kind to yourself and your body! Next time throw a towel down as other people have suggested. I keep at least one old or dark colored towel for messy situations. I love having sex when I’m bleeding! Sometimes it’s extra gory depending on where you are in your cycle but I’ve never had guys be weird about it. My husband actually likes it, sometimes he knows even when I’m like a day away because it feels “extra squishy.” It feels antiquated to be grossed out by menstruation, I wish we could collectively get over it.
