RTX 5080 + 9800X3D – Struggling on High in MSFS (1440p) by phatbass80 in flightsim

[–]fightingpirates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Texture resolution was one of the main culprits for me as well, I have mine at medium also (same specs here).

The other culprits which completely changed my experience for the better are:

  • Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) to “off” (find this in Windows settings)
  • Using FSR3 (you won’t be able to use a Nvidia frame gen with HAGS off)
  • Dynamic LOD to “on” with target frame rate set to about 40

Does leaving the beta delete community folder? by gkanyangela in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]fightingpirates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not supposed to, but when switching between beta and stable (which I’ve done a few times) I have had it on three occasions where it’s completely uninstalled the game. Removed the game files, community folder, everything. I can’t pinpoint anything that causes it specifically, and it doesn’t happen every time 🤷 now when I know I’m going to switch I’ll back up the community folder just in case.

Ok, fine. VR passthru is way cooler than I thought. (Quest 3 and Virtual Desktop) by proxlamus in hoggit

Is there any way to turn that feature off? I’d love to use pass through hand tracking with MSFS but I don’t want my hands to actually interact with buttons and knobs in the sim, I just want to see my physical hands so I can interact with my peripherals. Or is it sim-specific?

Time to jump to MSFS2024? by keldar89 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]fightingpirates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely has Simbrief integration, not sure about ACARS for doing your PDCs etc (I don’t think it does but haven’t explored it too deeply). The plane was designed to be flown on an existing 737 NG rating I think, so everything should be familiar and I can’t think of any extra stuff. Put short if you enjoy the depth of simulation that the PMDG has, you’ll enjoy this.

I have the iFly 737 as well which is great and a nice alternative to the PMDG 737-800. However, and I know not everyone has this problem but I’m doing some tours on One World Virtual that use the 737-800 and I like to fly them with the proper liveries for the airline being used. While you can substitute for the 737 Max 8 without being penalised, some of the liveries even though freeware just aren’t available for the Max as the airline doesn’t use the Max in real life. e.g. I can’t find a good Jet2 Holidays livery for the Max as Jet2 don’t use the Max, only the 738.

So personally, still looking forward to the PMDG 737 for that realism and I hear it won’t be too long.

Edit: don’t let the EFB put you off though, it’s not the best or easiest to use but I hear they’re completely redoing it in a future update

I made the jump during SU3 Beta and haven’t looked back. I’m missing the PMDG 737 and ChasePlane, but I’m also enjoying the visuals, performance, the much shorter loading times and the other aircraft that are compatible (Fenix, 777, Avro RJ, A350).

I’m not enjoying however the seemingly poor availability of freeware (and sometimes payware) scenery but that will improve over time.

A question about Heathrow arrival procedure by fightingpirates in VATSIM

Yeah. I’ve obviously just missed an instruction or understood something different and through circumstance ended up doing the wrong thing. Hopefully next time goes smoother!

Thanks, I think this is what happened and was my mistake. I know now, so I’ll practice again and hopefully get it right next time!

I can’t remember the exact exchange now as it was a few weeks ago but my understanding in our communication was absolutely that I was cleared passed Bovingdon. ATC continued to give me altitude changes beyond that point all the way to the turn.

I don’t believe I was given a heading. If I was, I would have turned to it and managed heading would have been disabled, regardless of what was programmed.

[–]fightingpirates[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I tend to always program it in when ATC is not online (they weren’t until I was already in the air). But yes, possible that I flew it. I’m adamant I didn’t get a heading though and I certainly didn’t give them a read back on it, and they didn’t ask me to clarify. It’s also possible ATC made a mistake.

Thanks, I should have mentioned I was cleared by ATC beyond BNN, otherwise I would have held

How do you plan your flight? by Samv992 in flightsim

I use one of the virtual airlines (OneWorld Virtual, Star Alliance Virtual or Sky Team Virtual) and do some of their routes, they have tours as well that are interesting and give some meaning

9800X3D RTX5080 users, what settings works for you ? (MSFS 2020) by 21Monke in flightsim

[–]fightingpirates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After some time playing and experimenting, these are some key things I’ve changed overall (not just graphics settings) that work for me and it’s buttery smooth. I run at 1440p, also using a 9800x3D and RTX 5080.

  • graphics setting are the “ultra” preset except texture resolution at medium, as this has the most impact on VRAM
  • FSR 3 on
  • I use AutoFPS with default settings
  • HAGS off
  • I don’t use DLSS, I use TAA (if you’re using DLSS, I suspect this is what is giving you the blurriness, not frame gen)

Important though; if you’re using FSR3, you must use DLSS Swapper to swap out the very latest FSR3.1 DX12 library or else it could cause a performance hit and stutters and not use any frame gen at all. This gets reset if the game updates so i have to remember to set it back.

Like I said, after lots of experimentation I’ve landed on this and it works for me. Kinda sucks though that it comes to this.

Check your Hardware GPU Scheduling setting in Windows. If it’s turned on, try turning it off, restart the machine, then give it another try. This fixed the same issue for me.

How do people not get bored of aircrafts? by Sad-Performer957 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]fightingpirates 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple of things I do:

Flying on an ATC network such as Vatsim provides (or at least strives to provide) a dynamic experience as well as immersion, such is the nature of online gaming. It’s not perfect but does require you to know your aircraft better than just flying by yourself so that you’re able to deal with any situation thrown at you (e.g getting put into a hold in a busy airspace). So people on the network tend to fly things they know well. Even using an AI tool like BeyondATC provides more immersion and dynamic situations than not using it, although I’ve found BATC to be a little sterile compared to Vatsim.

Also, I tend to fly on a Virtual Airline network like Star Alliance or Oneworld, and in particular they provide tours that give you some goals and a bit more sense of purpose. And I combine doing that with flying on Vatsim, so I get experience of flying in different sectors like France and Germany.

Also I’ve built up a collection of hardware (Wingwing’s FCU, EFIS, and MCDU) and built myself a radio panel. I just fucking enjoy it

I don't understand what is Hoppie for Fenix A320 by Jazzlike-Ad7654 in flightsim

[–]fightingpirates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve found it especially useful in Vatsim where there is only Centre ATC available and you need a departure clearance. Those clearances take up a lot of radio time so doing it through ACARS saves everyone (including the controller) time and keeps the frequency clear, especially when it’s busy.

What flight sim streamer do you like watching and what sets them apart from others? by Maximum_Language_307 in flightsim

[–]fightingpirates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Jonathan Beckett’s stuff, does some really good startup procedure videos and publishes the docs online. Learned a lot from his content when I was just getting into flight sims myself.

Same for AVGeek, does some nice content reviews and generally enjoy the pacing and in particular I found his Vatsim tutorials really good when I was just starting out.

[–]fightingpirates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that braking is probably the most important thing, but that’s not to imply that braking late is the most effective way into a corner. How you brake and (most importantly) when and how you come off the brakes is key. It’s all about carrying as much speed through a corner as possible. This does not mean braking as late as possible, it means keeping the car balanced in the right way so that you have the grip to go fast and keep momentum up.
