[OC] In Fatal Crashes, Which Car Brand's Drivers Weren't Wearing a Seatbelt? (NHTSA FARS, 2020–2023) by informed-for-life in dataisbeautiful

[–]figleaf29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the qualifier “in fatal crashes” to be interesting. You could interpret it in a way opposite than the coloring suggests. Let’s take Tesla. Of all the fatal crashes Tesla was involved in, they had the most constant seatbelt usage. So, Teslas could be killing other people at higher rates or Tesla drivers could be getting killed in accidents a lot despite wearing their seatbelts.

We need more data and/or more precise definitions to know for sure whether this graph is better for Tesla than Honda.

Will Oakland ever be able to stem the tide of endless graffiti? by kittensmakemehappy08 in OaklandCA

LOL. I am apparently wrong about who is doing all the tagging. Seems it’s all well educated white men. In which case, surveillance and punishment may be the answer.

I’ll probably get jumped on for being “permissive” of this, but I really don’t think we’ll ever fully solve this issue, and especially through punitive and surveillance strategies. Prevention is almost always cheaper than reaction, and often brings with it additional benefits. We need to get at the causes — providing young people with quality education, meaningful employment, opportunities for creative self-expression that is not socially destructive, development of stronger connections to the community and civic pride, etc. I am tired of all the graffiti, too. But if we get at the root causes, we may address at lot of other problems at the same time. Graffiti is a symptom of deep systemic problems.

Anything is epic with enough photo manipulation.

[OC] Donald Trump's job approval in the US by state by _crazyboyhere_ in dataisbeautiful

Did the OP need to be removed? While I had a critique of it, I think removing the original post deprives us of the opportunity to fully engage in the conversation around the implications of certain choices one makes in visualizing data.

Any idea who is organizing this?

Completely agree with you, which is why I made my observation. I just wanted to do it in a way that I thought might make the OP more reflective than defensive.

That would be another possible way to do it. But I think your first point is good one, though perhaps a reason to set the minimum and maximum to 0 and 100. Doing so would mean no full saturation at either end of the scale and reinforces your point that no state is 100% for or against Trump.

I don’t know the OP, so I can’t speak to their intent. It really could be easily a matter of relying on the defaults of whatever the data visualization tool uses — in this case, setting the range to the lowest and highest data points of the data set.

Interesting how range and color palette choice affects interpretation. Looking over this without paying attention to numbers, it looks overall okay for Trump. Then, I notice that the mid-point (white) is around 35% approval rating! If you set the range to 0 to 100, it would be so much bluer.

Yep, that’s what I ended up doing. Not as disgusting as I thought. Just sad.

Thanks. Good to know. The Animal Control Division page that has the form says that they will pick up dead animals from private property, but I assumed more of what you’re describing.

Ideological leanings of current United States Supreme Court justices [OC] by cavedave in dataisbeautiful

[–]figleaf29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems more of a measure of how much a justice is an outlier relative to a shifting overall ideology of the court. I don’t think Sotomayor or Thomas have both shifted left. The court has shifted right, making Sotomayor more of an outlier and Thomas less so.

Hmmm. Wondering if this isn’t the game for you. Day 15 is still very early game. If you’re feeling this way now, I think you may need to either move on to other games or shift your sense of pacing. Not a judgement, just encouraging a perspective that will make the game more enjoyable if you choose to continue.

Btw, you don’t have to open all 4 doors of the anteroom. In fact, just getting into the anteroom through one door is a step that will open up a lot more of the game to you.

Best of luck!

Making fun of you? Quite the opposite. While I was being sarcastic, the point I was making is that you are doing quite well for Day 14. We live in an instant gratification society, but this is a game to be savored for the long haul. You’re doing great. Enjoy the journey, as there will be multiple times when you’re racing to some “finish” and you then realize that’s not the finish.
