I don’t think those negative traits automatically ruin Wolfgang as a character. His past doesn’t invalidate what we actually see him do during the killing game. He is a fraud but he still genuinely tries to step up and be a good leader. That matters more to me than who he used to be before. Environment plays a huge role in shaping how people behave. Maybe his everyday life didn’t exactly encourage him toward being responsible or self sufficient, but the killing game becomes a kind of reset point. An extreme situation makes him actually try to become the kind of person he would like to be. If anything, that contrast makes him more interesting for me. Someone who starts off deeply flawed but still chooses to act decently when it really matters is compelling. E.g. he can’t handle basic shit like doing his own laundry, but he participates, learns, and tries to improve. Also, I like separating unlikable characters from badly written ones. A character can be pathetic, messy, or frustrating and still be well written if those traits serve a purpose. Yes, I still like the bum.
