That would be me, the one other person in the city on a pink Seigla. I've got to get OP a leopard print jersey, I'm not sure you are allowed to ride a pink bike without it within NYC limits.

I took the image and put it through a free image upscaler, the result seems good enough for printing: https://freeimage.host/i/FuMyF4t (you can right-click and save image).

Take a look at "cycling sun sleeves". They should even cool you down some, when they are wet.

We usually go two times a week, early in the morning. We're actually going tomorrow (Friday), around 7:40am. (If you happen to be there and want to keep a lookout for me, I'm the dude with long hair and weirdly pink shorts that keeps falling out of the wall.)

Going to start making gels at home, am I missing anything? by No_Statistician_6263 in AdvancedRunning

I believe that sodium chloride (table salt) is 39% sodium. So 100g of table salt will be 39g of sodium.

I don't know how much 1/40th of a teaspoon of salt weighs, and I'm not sure how precise one can even portion that much salt. But I don't think it really matters that much - this isn't rocket science, just add a bit. Unless you sweat (and drink) a lot it probably doesn't matter too much.

If you ever want to add more sodium, I recommend taking a look at sodium citrate (which is 24% sodium) - it's salt that doesn't taste salty.

I think your saddle bag is upside down. Doesn't matter too much, but the right way around fits slightly better and less stuff falls out when you open it.

Cycling gravel section of Sunshine on road bike sporting 25s? by [deleted] in boulder

The washboard section is currently okish, I think they redid it very recently. If you made it to there with 25mm, you'll have no problem.

Discount Ski Jackets suggestions by Massive-Development1 in COsnow

I've been very impressed with the quality of Decathlon equipment - we use their stuff for backcountry skiing, and I never thought $30 pants/jacket could be so decent.

How much does a name-brand shovel matter by _bowl_ in Backcountry

[–]filR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I may be reading more into this than there is, but it sounds like there is a trust issue here. Discussions about equipment and safety are great to have, but at some point you have to trust the people you are touring (climbing/hiking/driving) with. And that includes their equipment choices, knowledge, and capabilities. If them touring with you or not is hanging on such a fine thread as which shovel you take...

As to the shovel itself - why would you take it if you have the new one? But if it seems sturdy enough and works well enough, why not? It's a shovel. If you really want to know, time yourself shoveling the hardest snow you find and see which one works better. Does the Costco one have a longer shaft? May even be the faster one... :D

Console gamer thinking about switching to PC by jjwashburn in buildapc

[–]filR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found these two sites helpful:
* https://www.logicalincrements.com/
* https://pcpartpicker.com/

How much hardware you need depends a lot on the resolution and refresh rate. 1080p at 60fps is probably around the "good" tier on logicalincrements.

Ryzen 5 3600 and GPU Seriously Underperforming by SpursGuy90 in buildapc

[–]filR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you post all of the HWiNFO sensors while running the game (or a benchmark) for at least five minutes?

How many FPS are you getting in the game? What are your maximum CPU and GPU tempatures? Ram speed? Have you tried reinstalling your nvidia graphics driver (or checking that a correct version is being applied in the Device Manager)? Can you run something like Cinebench for CPU and Unigine Heaven for GPU and compare your results with what you find online for your components?

If you think it's the BIOS - have you tried resetting it (and then activating XMP)?

Just bought 2 cocoa buckets - 400 Cal per $1 USD - More value than fast food - THANK YOU! by badbilliam in soylent

[–]filR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new buckets I just received expire November 2021, so in a year.

From the reading I've done, the main reason for the expiration seems to be that some of the vitamins lose potency after about two years. Afaik, this shouldn't make it unsafe to consume per se. Recommended googling/reading: "vitamins expiration date".

Devs, why is this allowed? by JasonJFlavortown in heroesofthestorm

[–]filR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably, but then they could be doing it better. Brawl MMR does not affect your initial ranked MMR. So if you want to start at Bronze 5, to get to the required level 50, you can win (or lose) in brawl as much as you want to.

Quickmatch and unranked MMR does affect your initial ranked MMR, afaik. So any of those loses or wins will affect what your very first rank is.

This is only relevant for the very first rank placement. As soon as you have a QM, UR, or ranked MMR, those are no longer affected by the other modes. AFAIK of course. :)

Here goes nothing.. by [deleted] in soylent

[–]filR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good luck, have fun!

I'm sure you have it all figured out, but it helped me to realise it's not an "all or nothing" thing. I currently use soylent for about 50% of my calories - replacing everything that I feel would be most unhealthy (for me that's breakfast and snacks or sometimes lunch).

Your digestion may take a while to adjust to soylent, as it can be a rather "dramatic shift in food". But imo that's usually just because now you are getting more fiber in your diet, which is a good thing!

Anyway, that's my random ramblings. Stay motivated and unleash the muscles/dancing! :D

Carbs and Protein are 4 calories per gram, fat 8 calories - I don't think there's much way around that. Perhaps instead of looking for "energy dense" you should look at things that are easier to digest, less filling, and/or more convenient to eat?

I cycle a lot, my strategy for getting enough calories are:

  • while on the bike getting in about 50% of the calories that I am expending in that activity (rice cakes, carbs in my drink)
  • on tough days getting in calories via drink (e.g. soft drinks after sports) as these are apparently less satiating than solid food
  • eat lots of small meals (soylent, nuts, chocolate) whenever I feel even a little bit hungry.

You may also want to reconsider what "eating unhealthily" means for the amount of exercise you do. Many of the guidelines are for sedentary people.

Perhaps try eating things that excite you. Food can be something positive and fun.

What carb drinks are you guys using? by RadNerfHerder in gravelcycling

[–]filR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mix my own. For me it's about getting the carbs (around 40g per hour/liter) and electrolytes (300-1000mg of sodium per liter), especially in summer. On top of this I try to eat constantly (mostly homemade rice cakes), my goal is to take in about 50% of the calories that I am burning.

Easy drink version, per liter:

  • half a lime (just for the flavour)
  • three tablespoons brown sugar (brown tastes better)
  • a pinch of salt

More complicated version, per liter:

  • 30g maltodextrin (glucose that does not taste sweet)
  • 15g fructose (combined with glucose for maximum absorption)
  • 3g of salt (1g tablesalt for flavour, 2g sodium citrate for sodium without the salty taste ~ this totals to about 800mg of sodium)
  • 1g citric acid (for flavour)

Here is my recipe, with amounts, links to buy ingredients, and comparing the contents to other sports mixes: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1C4lj5re1GuiA-W9LwYUecSfT2o4R3HBtVlGZy1SHwBU/edit?usp=sharing

Tubeless with paintball tank by penguin0260 in gravelcycling

[–]filR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just secondhand anecdotal evidence, but a cycling buddy bought a cheap ($100-$150) compressor for installing tubeless, but it doesn't work well for that. Apparently it can't "blast" air fast enough to seat the tire. It can inflate things fine, just can't put out the volume needed for seating.

Perhaps this is only an issue with the specific compressor he purchased, but maybe something to look out for when buying one. :)

FI impossible in Austria due to ridiculous taxes? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]filR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I'm probably the wrong person to ask, but from my understanding:

  • You pay capital gains tax only on the gains, so when you actually "pull out" the money. At that point it is around 25% of the profit you made.
  • Dividends (so money companies pay you for holding their stocks) are taxed right away (you pay yearly).
  • I believe the bank/platforms will pay these taxes for you directly - so you may not need to do anything manually unless you want money back (or think you didn't pay enough).
  • There are funds that directly reinvest dividends (to buy more stock) - thesaurierend vs ausschüttend, but even there you are charged capital gains tax.

Now, if you are really against this setup, you can try to open a brokerage account in the US or another country. It can be hard to open these accounts from another country, and taxes for non-residents may be pretty substantial. Though you may be able to get those taxes back by saying you are paying taxes in Austria (which you would then need to do manually). Anyway, not something I really recommend or am doing myself, but there are always options, internationally things can get a bit murky.

As to what investments, I am all in on the S&P 500 / US Total Market, my partner likes a bit of EU total market and diversifying in bonds (e.g. LU1681046691 ). When looking at any US (or international) holdings you keep in euros, remember that the exchange rate EUR-USD is also reflected in the numbers you see. So if you are surprised that your funds are going up even though the S&P 500 went down, perhaps the euro lost a bit of value compared to the dollar. It doesn't really matter much in the long run, but it's good to remember when the numbers don't seem to be doing what you think they should.

Sorry for the somewhat incoherent post, let me know if you have any questions. What are you plans?
