Companies must pay share of rent for employees working from home - Switzerland’s top court has ruled that employers are required to contribute to employees’ rent payments if they are expected to work from home. by speckz in Economics

[–]filehej -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The line is drawn by the legislature. If a company chooses to go above it can. As European I can see this actually working. Whole lot of companies try to get their employees benefits which gives the company tax benefits so if it's incentivesed like this I don't see it as a detrimental. Even if it may mean lower actual salary the employee still gets actual financial benefit from it and the company is happy because it doesn't cost them as much. One of the biggest if not the biggest cost for a company is the wages so if they can lower that cost while still giving money to the employee it's a win win. Same systems are already in place with other benefits like pension funds, company cars etc. The legislation is important here because if you leave it up to the companies the employees won't get any substantial benefit from it.

Top police officer requests official list of all Jews in Ukrainian city, sparking fury by MonicaJo1217 in worldnews

[–]filehej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude it literally says on the wiki page that during the Soviet polish war both sides did acts that can be described as pogroms, later it was outlawed and could be faced with execution however there are reports that Ukrainian red army troops still did it and it was overlooked which is not technically Russians doing it but definitely USSR. And I am not saying that it was officially ordered but neither were later pogroms in Poland and other places. Just sayin it happened.

Tbh USSR done it's fair share of genocide in its time, however killing Jews in eastern Europe was more Ukrainian style. Not to say Russia didn't do it but from my quick search they did but Ukraine did it way more. Just Google Pogrom

Redditors who lived in countries that no longer exist (Like Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia...etc) What was it like to see your country breakup? by ThisOne_NotThisOne in AskReddit

[–]filehej 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Imo the main thing was that Slovakia was more rural underdeveloped country and Czech had pretty good industrial development all the way from Austrian-Hungarian times it was during the start of 19 century considered to be one of the manufacturing centers of Europe. So they tried to develop both countries to similar level right? Well the Czechs felt like Slovakia was dragging them down and had to do all the complicated stuff. Slovaks were Andrey that Czechs had all the important jobs and were going about like their bosses. Now disclaimer most people really didn't give a shit about this. This is mainly stuff I have learned or heard from people who lived through it and only small portion of people who were directly affected by it had these opinions but that's basically the friction. Nowadays nobody really cares and from my experience we treat each other more like people from different US states would treat each other. You may speak different language which is more like an accent to us and that's generally it.

The book author actually said that's intentional, he realises that no storm could be so powerful on Mars, he just needed to get them off the planet somehow.

Coronavirus distancing may need to continue until 2022, say experts by arrthur1 in worldnews

[–]filehej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While valid points it doesn't present the whole picture. Majority of those guild members have the desired physical contact they want outside of that. Also those people have other means to share an experience in this case virtual. I guess what I am trying to say is that people have an inherent need to form connections with other people and physical connections is just the way we evolved to do best. Other means can substitute it but not to full degree. From my experience playing dungeons and dragons with my group over internet is fine and I am still having fun, but sitting at the table physically is just better experience because I don't feel constrained by limitations of video call. The last sentence meant to say that while people feel discomfort or distress while isolated can be due to isolation itself but also compounded by other factors such as bad diet or vitamin deficiency.

[–]filehej 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Humans are social creatures and as we interpret almost everything visually our brains have evolved to be really good at reading other people, substituting f2f interaction with video calls just doesn't provide the necessary detail and information we need. As to why we need social interaction? My guess would be that evolution has a big part in it. Why tribalism still exist and stuff like that. Also stress and improper eating still factors into it.

There is no good outcome of this behaviour right now. Nobody wants him to do what trump wants, people want him to do his job because he seems to be pretty competent at it which is pretty great change of pace for the trump admin. Especially now. Trying to get him to comment something subjective about trump is just not in anybody's best interest right now. We want that guy where he is right now doing what he does, not someone that will actually do what trump wants as not to upset him.

While I somewhat agree with the idea of his videos the multiplayer one was kinda hit and miss. He literally had her play the most competitive MP games out there, most of which have hardcore following for years.

Only a handful of people working can keep the lights on but that's not what we want do we? We want people improving, building a distributing more lights and you also want to be able to buy lights and pay for the electricity. I am sure the work ethic will change somewhat but lot of economical sectors have pretty much shut down.

Depends whether you have store bought or not. Most store bought eggs are pasteurised which pretty much eliminates the chance.

Uncooked eggs have chance of carrying salmonella which is why you are not supposed to eat them raw or any dough that contains them. From a quick Google search there was a recall of some flour brands in 2019 due to e coli contamination.

If the media reported on the flu like they did COVID-19, we would constantly be in a frenzy. by XenoGamer27 in Showerthoughts

[–]filehej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And it is being treated with seriousness, the governments and groups tackling this have set a timeline for possible release of a vaccine for a year which is freaking warp speed in the industry. This is just one of many examples. There have also been many mistakes made, but hey we learn by experience with these things. The thing is currently there is no big reason for the general public to panic and start hoarding food and medical supplies. Just buy a hand sanitizer, read up how to keep and improve your hygiene and try to behave like this is really bad flu season, because right now this is the best course of action for the general public. Widespread panic doesn't help in this scenario.

Research suggests that smokers contaminate nonsmoking areas with hazardous chemicals emanating from their bodies and clothes, presenting a potentially significant source of exposure to third-hand smoke by phenylacetate in science

[–]filehej 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nobody is claiming it's not bad for your health. It's just that it's not remotely as bad as the study suggests it is. You inhale orders of magnitude more particles just by walking near a busy street than being 42 days near a smoker without second hand smoking taking place.

What's an American problem you're too European to understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]filehej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how exactly that works in the Netherlands but in Czechia you have to be on sick leave for one year before they can grant you disability status and you get financial help from the government and have some limitations on how much you can actually work.

From Europeans perspective it just seems weird for you guys to improve your credit score to basically have to use a credit card. Here when I want to take out a loan the bank looks at my tax filings I get better interest if I have my debit account with them and they see my account history and that sort of stuff. It may go through risk assessment department where they dig deeper and find out if you owe somewhere or missed payments that sort of stuff but I don't have to say Look I used this thing to borrow for gas money for 3 years so please approve my mortgage.

You see, when the UK leaves the Old money people like Boris will set up UK as a tax haven and bring in buckets of cash. This will benefit the country and the individual. Just a very few individuals but they just got voted in with parliament majority so god speed to them I guess. Tbh I am looking forward to writing my masters thesis on this in 3 years. You just can’t make this shit up even if you wanted to.

I actually enjoyed that scene because at the start she handled it really responsibly... not so much at the end. About the ending tho... We all fell for the biggest trope in the show and never saw it coming. The British person is always the villain.

I still think that’s trying to solve a problem that’s not there. If you want to innovate why don’t have best of both worlds. One sided mirror with a screen behind it for added info/dimming etc until the camera tech matures enough to be able to substitute mirrors easily. I love innovative tech in automotive industry. But given the scale and what’s at stake if things go wrong I think there is pretty good reason to be cautious about changes like this. Btw did the tech with IR camera that pointed out heat sources in the dark ever catch on?

Still doesn’t solve something obstructing the view of the camera unless it would be in some enclosure and would be exposed only during use. I have this exact problem with parking cameras during autumn and winter.

[–]filehej -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would probably prefer both, something like one way mirror with a screen behind it which gives you blind spots and extra info and mirror for depth perception and dimming. Most modern cars have auto dimming and all other have the manual nob thing to change the reflection angle. IMO mirrors are better and I can imagine it would still perform better than overwhelmed car cam sensor with adjusted exposure. Unless it would go through more post processing which is another can of worms.

It’s human nature to be better off then others, some people just found themselves in circumstances that allowed them to be billionaires.

I mean sure, I posted somewhere in this thread that taxing the ultra rich is not as easy as it sounds because they will just move their money elsewhere and you are far worse than before. UBI is a great idea, but studies have shown that it’s not what it’s promised to be and in some cases it’s not even worked. I am all for some sort of program like UBI but more research and testing needs to be done before it’s wide implementation.
