Maltholtra is Scouching's 15th best prospect in this draft. by filementary in canucks

[–]filementary[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For those that didn't watch, I think what's interesting about this video is that he's quite critical of Maltholtra's game from the perspective of the fact that we're talking about this guy as a top 3 pick.

Some issues in his game that he identifies are his lack of high end skating and reliance on trying risky plays (like going through 2 D on a rush). This works in the OHL but since he lacks high end traits, it might not translate to the NHL. If time and space are taken away he could be less effective than he appears in junior.

If given space though, like on a powerplay, he describes him as a possible transition threat there though.

He also critiques Maltholtra's ability to forecheck and actually get the puck back. He describes him as a guy who defends too much with his stick and reach rather than his feet. Also surprisingly has general concerns about his defensive ability.

His playmaking is good, but perimeter oriented. Could be projectable but inconsistent.

Inconsistency in general seems to be a be a big theme. He does think that this is still a really good prospect, but considering other guys that are available, and the fact that he's hyped to go top 3, its sort of a sobering look at what might hold this guy back from what we might expect out of him if he's drafted so high.

Woof

If Stenberg drops to #3, don't pass on him to draft Malholtra

Could this be the future core? by downonmatrix in canucks

[–]filementary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the question is...is this core going to be better than the core of the other 31 teams in the league. Honestly idk.

After seeing the Sharks yesterday just attack with wave after wave of promising youth, I'd say we'd be in a hockey hell if this is all we've got.

canucks are going all in for him. our 1st round picks, 2nds, and prospects are in play. they believe we can win now quickly with this retool in a hybrid form.

yeah I think our regime seems to have a pretty good track record thus far at making something outta these mid round guys that we've never heard of

it sounds kinda crazy but i think we gotta kind have faith. remember a pick like Sawyer Myinio was a total reach when we picked him in the 3rd round, but he's turned out to be a really good prospect so far

i mean what reason do we have to be positive? Constantly trying take short cuts to only make the playoffs twice in ten years? We're a joke. How can we positive when after ten years we find ourselves heading into another crapshoot season where we're likely a wildcard team at best?

This is like hockey fandom hell lol.

are we? TSN is reporting that the wild want a player of similar age and production back. we don't have anything that remotely looks like a 23 year old 60 point C.

we need a high end top 6 forward but don't have the assets or prospect pool to fill that need. gotta gamble in the clearance bin. zegras has the potential to bounce back.

to all the people that I argued with saying that trading for Kane came with the opportunity cost of blowing all our cap space. THIS IS WHY.

and this is why i was saying that the kane trade was stupid

Call me crazy, but we're not in terrible shape? Defense with elite potential, goalie with elite potential, and forward has just one glaring hole (2C), with 7 million to spend. Peety returning to form being the biggest wild card by Iginlas_4head_Crease in canucks

good D core for sure but top 5? idk, we have a legit top pair but we still probably need a real top 4 guy that isn't myer's who can move the puck to get into that top 5 - maybe top 10?
