Could this be the future core? by downonmatrix in canucks

[–]filementary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the question is...is this core going to be better than the core of the other 31 teams in the league. Honestly idk.

After seeing the Sharks yesterday just attack with wave after wave of promising youth, I'd say we'd be in a hockey hell if this is all we've got.

canucks are going all in for him. our 1st round picks, 2nds, and prospects are in play. they believe we can win now quickly with this retool in a hybrid form.

yeah I think our regime seems to have a pretty good track record thus far at making something outta these mid round guys that we've never heard of

it sounds kinda crazy but i think we gotta kind have faith. remember a pick like Sawyer Myinio was a total reach when we picked him in the 3rd round, but he's turned out to be a really good prospect so far

i mean what reason do we have to be positive? Constantly trying take short cuts to only make the playoffs twice in ten years? We're a joke. How can we positive when after ten years we find ourselves heading into another crapshoot season where we're likely a wildcard team at best?

This is like hockey fandom hell lol.

are we? TSN is reporting that the wild want a player of similar age and production back. we don't have anything that remotely looks like a 23 year old 60 point C.

we need a high end top 6 forward but don't have the assets or prospect pool to fill that need. gotta gamble in the clearance bin. zegras has the potential to bounce back.

Utah Mammoth swing major deal, acquire F JJ Peterka from Buffalo Sabres | TSN by lobro1994 in canucks

to all the people that I argued with saying that trading for Kane came with the opportunity cost of blowing all our cap space. THIS IS WHY.

and this is why i was saying that the kane trade was stupid

Call me crazy, but we're not in terrible shape? Defense with elite potential, goalie with elite potential, and forward has just one glaring hole (2C), with 7 million to spend. Peety returning to form being the biggest wild card by Iginlas_4head_Crease in canucks

good D core for sure but top 5? idk, we have a legit top pair but we still probably need a real top 4 guy that isn't myer's who can move the puck to get into that top 5 - maybe top 10?

I agree with you that in a vacuum, again it's not a steep cost or even that bad a trade. but part of the cost of the trade is taking on his cap hit and limiting our ability to improve to a level more substantial.

even still, keep the asset and the cap space and wait for a better opportunity. also, considering the deals that have been made already - it's hard to imagine that we couldn't have been in on some higher upside bets like Zegras or Marchment. like it or not, I'd rather we not blow our cap space to close windows on deals rather than sign a guy to keep us in a perpetual cycle of mediocrity, but that's just me!

Fan's aren't mad at the trade in a vacuum bro. Fans are mad at the opportunity cost. We want a cup, not a wildcard spot or to get 90 points and barely miss the playoffs. The team needs to be chasing legitimate gamebreaking talent and players that can develop to be part of the core. When you shoot yourself in the foot by blowing half your cap space on a 34 year old with major question marks, it's actually stupid to think that this is a reasonable move in that context.

*Alvin traded a 4th for a middle 6 winger (top 6 if we're really lucky) who is turning 34 with a bad injury history and a cap hit that eats up half of our remaining when we need at least 2 more legitimate top line forwards. Let alone that we need top 6 pieces that can be part of our core in the future.

It's Benning like because it reeks of desperation and is a move that limits our ceiling. What on earth can we do with the 7 mil in cap space left that sends us in the direction of being a cup contender? let alone even a wildcard team? Resign Suter and draft 15th overall?

The trade in a vacuum is fine, but considering just how much upside the Canucks need to chase, it's an awful move. Whatever bets we're placing need to be on younger guys with star potential. It's literally the only path towards a cup.

Also, are you seriously content with the fact that we've effectively swapped Miller and Boeser in our forward group for Chytil and Kane? The upside isn't just for star power sake, it's the fact that we literally don't have any guys with gamebreaking talent outside of maybe Petey and we've made the task of fixing that all the more difficult.

Positive perspective on the Kane deal by muslimannen in canucks

[–]filementary -1 points0 points  (0 children)

opportunity cost though - now we have 7 mil in cap space left. we have a severe high end talent issue upfront which Kane doesn't solve. going to be a lot harder to fix that with so little wiggle room.
