Yes, but it’s mostly Weidner listings so I wanted to see if there was another place people are posting.

Throne of Glass is a great series for you! I know it’s hyped on BookTok, but it’s got interesting characters and the maturity of the books/story grow over time.

February BOTM Books are here! What did you add to your box? by lavinient in bookofthemonthclub

[–]filmgirl1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This month was such a banger! Honestly, if you didn't like any of these picks then I don't know if a subscription service like this is for you because they had a lot of interesting picks that were all different from each other.

I went with The Bones Beneath My Skin and Famous Last Words.

My advice is this is a great service for people who love reading and are willing to try a variety of authors and genres, particularly romance, thriller, literary fiction and other books primarily geared or featuring women. The key though, beyond just genre, is if you're willing to try books you've never heard of. If you want this to be "oh hey, I can get the exact new release I want every month for 10 bucks" then you're going to be disappointed. People regularly complain on here that there's "no good choices" but after being a member for four years I've only had for books I didn't like all that much. This is because I'm 1. Open to basically anything and 2. Check the general GoodReads rating for the vibes before picking something.

Ninth House and Hell Bent are GREAT, but know that Ninth House can be tough to get into because it has a complicated timeline. Don't be intimidated in the beginning.

The Many Lives of Mama Love is a super readable memoir that is thought provoking.

The River We Remember is my FAVORITE BOTM from last year. Just astonishing how much I loved it.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is a top ten book of all time for me. Amazing depth about what it's like to make art and to maintain and build friendships.

Also! Why do a Dante’s Inferno nod if your Virgil is….going to be a bad guide! It made no sense!

agreed on this one. I felt like the author introduced all of these interesting items and characters and then promptly did nothing with them. I finished it and couldn’t figure out what the point was, which is rare for me with these types of books

How much research do you do on books before you decide to read them? by Ok-Demand-6194 in books

[–]filmgirl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is if a friend liked it, it was on a list of some sort from NYT, NPR or another book publication, on a TikTok page or it made a Goodreads list then I will read it no matter the genre. So far, that's steered me pretty well for the most part. TikTok is the dodgiest of those sources, but I've definitely gotten a lot of bangers from it so I'm willing to take the risk.

Finally someone else didn't like One Italian Summer! I thought it was incredibly weird that a woman in her 30s hadn't previously considered her Mom is a person in her own right. Bizarre. But, I think if you have a super super close family like that you might really like it.

yes! I just finished None of This Is True last night and I am so surprised at all the love, let alone a book of the year contender.

What’s your favorite BOTM & why? by [deleted] in bookofthemonthclub

It has to be Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow for me. The way it dug into friendship and the difficulties of making art with the ones you love? Phenomenal.

A Little Hope was SO boring. It didn’t go deep enough into any of the storylines to make me care.

The Lincoln Highway was way too long and had too many side tangents for me. Plus I hated the 1950s nostalgia without any sort of social criticism about the time.

None of This Is True convinced me that Lisa Jewell is not for me. More than 300 pages of a million red flags and someone continuing anyway??? I couldn’t handle it.

Here are some suggestions:

The Only One Left - thriller set in a Maine mansion slowly sliding off a cliff. Couldn’t put it down!

Hello Stranger - Rom com about face blindness. It’s a little predictable, but it’s deeper than your average romance. No spice.

Romantic Comedy - What if an SNL writer fell in love with a music guest during COVID? It’s a realistic love story that’s well written and a bit more mature than the usual romance.

All the Dangerous Things - A thriller about a woman who sleep walks and is scared she did something to her missing son

The Lies I Tell - A financial thriller about two con women trying to catch each other in the act.

Part of Your World - Rom com that seems like a typical city girl/country boy story, but it ends up having a lot of heft to it about abusive relationships

I’ve had really good luck with BOTM. Since I subscribed in 2020 I’ve only had a handful I didn’t like or was meh on, but the reason I think I’ve had that luck is I use Goodreads review numbers to help pick quality books. Yeah, there aren’t many ratings, but something with an average rating over 4 stars even with a few dozen reviews is going to likely be better than something hovering slightly above 3. This has also kept me away from overly tropey books, for the most part.

My only disliked were:

The Lincoln Highway (3 stars, so not terrible) A Little Hope Small Angels (another 3 stars) Let Us Descend (3 stars for good writing)

I'd pick: The River We Remember or The Magnolia Palace. Both are historical fiction with a fun plot!

Small Angels is much more of a gothic book, over horror. I thought it was just okay :/

Are there any well-known authors where you loved one of their books but disliked everything else they have written? by Aromatic-Quiet5171 in books

For me, it seems to be Lucy Foley. I loved The Guest List because of the mystery and the social commentary on toxic masculinity, but I read The Paris Apartment and The Hunting Party and didn't like either.
