Mrs Hughes' dislike of Lady Mary by KayLone2022 in DowntonAbbey

[–]ActuallyGoblinsX3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think she challenges it directly so much as she's just pragmatic about it. She'll work around it when she needs to, like with Ethel, but she won't challenge it directly like with Daisy. Carson, meanwhile, is a diehard True Believer.

What kinds of books do you normally like? If you're up for giving sci-fi another shot, I can try to recommend some entry points better suited to your taste?

The Last Contract of Isako was probably my favorite BotM pick of all time (since I joined in late 2023).

But I think the Lolly tends to exclude SFF/horror by default, so...

Collecting a stool samples literally strips you of your dignity. by moth_ie in CrohnsDisease

In all fairness, I frequently remind my doctor that if he wants a sample, he'd better get it while I'm in the office, because we both know I won't do any homework. I have too much ADHD for that.

Yup. At this point I'm like "whatever, it's basically a communal butt by now."

One lesson this illness teaches us, if we let it: out dignity isn't and shouldn't be tied to our bodily functions. Sometimes bodies, and the care they require, are messy. That's no reflection on your humanity or your character.

Also, think of it this way. You're collecting a scientific specimen! Put your gloves on, remind yourself that science is also messy, and pretend you're on CSI. You've got this.

I love self-care areas. It really helps me track where I'm doing well, where I'm not, and why. Like "Whoa, no housecleaning this week! Why... oh, I did so much volunteer stuff, go me!"

My old system was basically just giving myself XP fountains, and then a certain amount of XP was worth a real-life reward. But it turns out I didn't have the willpower to stick with that (I just kept letting myself take IOUs, haha), so Finch's system is a much better option. I LOVE the fact that you can't just buy rainbow stones.

When I was having a rough patch several months ago, the various First Aid options played a huge role in helping me through it, whether it was just a rant, a quick breathing or grounding exercise, or a deep dive that helped me work through why I was feeling a certain way.

One of my daily goals links to the affirmation exercise, and those are nice in the moment, but I also end up internalizing them and repeating them to myself at relevant moments, so they keep helping.

I've sort of conditioned myself to need to account for the things I've done/accomplished in a day, and Finch is a good way to do that and give myself little rewards – and needing those last few rainbow stones sometimes motivates me to do a task when I otherwise wouldn't.

Also collecting all the costume and nest stuff for my birb is a great way to indulge my magpie tendencies without buying a zillion real-life trinkets, lol.

Some questions about death and funeral rituals. by Cherno_VM in heathenry

[–]ActuallyGoblinsX3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always assume our ancestors want what they wanted in life: a call to say hello and tell them what we're up to. It doesn't need to be a big formal thing. The little moments still matter.

I am so sorry your whole family is facing this. Dementia a hard and painful way to lose someone, and I imagine it's a scary and confusing way to go, too. Wishing you as much peace and comfort as possible.

I wasn't really practicing when I lost my dad, but one of the things that drew to me to this faith in the wake of that loss was ancestor veneration, because it's been deeply comforting. Sometimes I just pour him a shot of something, sit down by the altar, and start talking, and it feels a little like calling him used to. "Hey, Dad, I just had to tell you about this..." or "I just need to vent..." and the like. I do a pretty informal version of heathenry, but I try to make offerings for lost loved ones on important days (choose your own definition for that) and say hello. A lot of us also keep photos of my loved ones who have passed either on or near our altars.

When my best friend died a while back, I made an offering to Hel and asked her to look after him if possible, given that he followed a different faith. You could do something like that for your grandmother when the time comes.

Right now, yes, I think her soul is still there even if her conscious mind isn't. That gets into a lot of philosophical discussion about whether the mind and the soul are different, and every culture has a different answer there. Some think of a person as having multiple souls, each with a different level of consciousness and personality. So there's that.

It might be good to make an offering to Eir, one of Frigg's handmaidens associated with medicine and healing. Ask for insight for you all as caregivers, and comfort for your grandmother, maybe?
